I was wondering if this can be done? And if so what is involved?

Yes it can be done all you have to do is sell the 250x and buy a 250R. Really though theres pretty much no way to turn a 250x into an R.

The 250R's frame has much better geomtery and is stronger than the 250X frame so you best bet is to do what previous poster advised. Sell the X and buy an R.

You should take your 250x and put a 350x motor in it. I have seen that done many times and they run real good.

Is it possible? Absolutely

Is it easy? No. I'll admit, 1987 TRX250X, 1987 TRX250r, it would seem possible they have very similar designs. Unfortunately, they do not, they are vastly different.

Is it worth it? No.

BIG said it, get yourself a 350X engine. The swap is MUCH easier than a 250r motor, it's almost bolt-in. The only concern is getting a 350X motor, because the ones in good shape are expensive, the cheaper one's are a real gamble. However, you have that same problem with a 250r motor.

Them 350X motors can be made dang fast, too. It's easily possible to build one that will run circles around a piped 250r.
