Electric shifter not working

Newbie here. A good friend of mine bought an 03 Recon with the electric shift for his son. Now it's not shifting. He would like to try and fix it himself, and not take it to the dealer. He is building his house right now and money is REAL tight.
He says that it looks like it is flashing a code? Is this a possibility? If so, does anyone know how to read the codes? Without taking it to the dealer? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks. Later, Sxrlar.

I have had the shift up or dound button get stuck on. that causes it not to shift. may want to look into somthing like that.

check to make sure the battery connections are good and tight. the shifter pulls alot of power and if the connections aren
't tight it won't give it enough power.
