I just traded my 02 400ex for an 89 250r. I am new to the 2 stroke world and am wondering if I have a problem on my hands. I knew the guy that owned the 250r and it was always kept up well. We went riding before we traded and the 250r was submerged and drownded out. We changed the oil and got all the water out and replaced the reeds. The problem I am having now is when I am going through the gears it has a sputter at the top end of the gears. It's not like a rev limiter sputter, it's like it is missing or something. I have checked the spark plug and it is good. Does anyone know what the problem could be if there is one?

Take the stator cover off and check for rust on the flywheel.

Remove all wire connections, clean them and apply WD-40 as well.

If it is not hotter and more humid the jetting could now be off as well. I would first go over the entire electical system.

I'd replace the spark plug for starters, it may look good but for $2.00 might as well replace it. I have chased sputtering problems around and around and ended up being the plug all along when it looked good and had good spark.

I didn't check the plug myself, when I had the reeds replaced, I had them to check the plug just to make sure that it was good. I think that I have located the problem. The plug wire has a big cut in it. Do you guys think this could be the problem?

ur CDI most likely has a crack in it somewhere... u probly wont be able to see it, but the water can fid it easily..... i knwo this, cuz mine has a crack in it, and when i get it wet, i have a top end sputter till it dries out.

if it is jetting then your mainjet is too rich
if its a 160 then get a 150 or a 145 mainjet and it should solve that
