I got a 450r awhile ago and I have a question that I need to get answered. When I start my 450 I have to give it a little gas when I kick start it to start it if it has been sitting for a couple of days. Is that the way it is for every one?

Full choke, no choke doesn't matter. Won't start without aliitle gas.

Turn up the idle. Black knob underneath your carb. I never give my quad gas when kicking it.

Giving it gas causes it to backfire and blow out the kick-start side of your cases! NEVER give it gas while kicking!!! Sometimes I try the hotstart and or choke to cold start it!;)

Hold the throttle at full for a couple seconds. Then release the gas, and try to start it. The accelerator pump will shoot gas in the engine, and should help it start if it hasn't run for a while. It works really well on my brother's 426 bike.

you will learn the hard way if you give it gas to start it. My brother went out to ride it one day and gave it some gas then kicked it over. The kicker kicked back and hit his shin it was pretty damn funny to watch but he was in pain.

Just pump the throttle 2-3 times then kick when cold or even after a stall, I never have to even use the hot start with this method.

That's exactly how it is for me. If I leave it sit for a couple weeks I can either:

1. Kick it many, many times until I'm winded.
2. Pump the throttle 2-3 times then kick it once.

I prefer #2. It won't explode things when cold. The engine needs fuel and if it's not hot, it won't kick back.

Note: I don't do this when the motor is warm and it'll start on the 1st or 2nd kick every time. It's only after it has sat awhile.

Well I tried everything you guys said about pumping the throttle and all. But all the 450 did was sputter. It would not start. Then i did the ole touch of gas and whalla it started right up. I just give it a little gas not much but I still don't get it? Could the accelorater pump be messed up? And how would the cases explode if I did give it gas? I didn't think and gas was sucked into the case I thought that was 2 stroke stuff?

Did you adjust the engine idle knob?
