Hey, what parts would be a must to race MX on my 2003 300EX?Thinking about getting into racing but need to know what kind of parts and brands you would recommend and would extended A-Arms and aftermarket shocks be neccessary? Thanks.

------------------------------------------------------------
2003 300EX
Nerf Bar
Grab Bar
Jet Kit
DG Exhaust

first you need better tires and more power get a K&N some razr 20 or 18 tires and a cam (web if you can afford it and harddend rockers), then id go for some plus 3 a arms later with whater ever shocks you can get

Low on cash...What would be the minimum parts you would put on it to race besides the tires?I also have a K&N Air Filter on it.

You don't NEED anything to race except a kill switch and nerf bars. A lot of it depends on the rider. My friend raced his all stock 300ex and did really good. But if you want it to be really fast, and ride nice on the track. Just do all the mods that I have in my sig, plus a rev box, and a rear shock. And instead of the 400ex a-arns that I have, get elka shocks and burguard +4 long travel a-arms. But on a 300 you really need to look into suspension. I did all my go fast mods first and I finally got suspension an drealized how amazing it is.

If you are low on cash, get some 18 inch rear tires, and 19 inch fronts. Then buy some wheel spacers. You do run the risk of bending your axle, but a wider quad is a must for MX.

Would the stock suspension bottom out on me and basically not help? and If I lowered it should I buy a DuraBlue Axle to stop the risk of breaking because of the suspension loss? Would I need to get a standard length axle or a +2 to widen it?

hondardr4life

Well you don't put lower suspension on it, you just put better suspension on it. You won't break an axle. But if you do get a durablue, get a +4 like I have. Or you could get +5 wheel spacers (+2.5 inches on each side).

If it's your 1st t ime racing & your low on $$ then I would go out there stock & try it too see if you like it. If you end up liking it then go for some nerf bars, tires, kill switch, yes wider is better but I wouldn't run spacers on a mx track we only run them for flattrack, I had some on the rear & my son took it over & jump & it wasn't good, save your $$ & get an axle(you can get a Tusk one for $199), then save up for a arms, I run "homeade" +3's & it's AWESOME, I would NEVER go back to stock!! After you do that then you can start on the motor, go w/ a bigger high compression piston, cam, rockers,FULL exhaust you will notice a difference w/ just exhaust & air filter :)
Hope this helps :D

Ite thanks for all the help. It's helped me a bunch. Where can you buy a Tusk axle, if I happen to get one?

Tires, axle, a arms, shocks, nerfs, and a kill switch should all be at the top of the list.

Send me a PM man...

My friend who owns a race shop specializes in 300ex national race parts..

He fabs 300ex +3 long travel a-arms to accept a 400ex shock. He sells them as a package with stock 400ex shocks for UNDER $500...thats arms, tie rods, ball joints, stock 400ex shocks! or for extra cash you can upgrade to an Elka shock!

PM me for any more info!

the first thing I would get is a big set of balls.

Shocks are an absolute must on a 300ex. Along with +2/+1f or +3/+1f a-arms. The 300ex is tippy and you wont be able to keep up in the corners w/o the a-arms. And the stock shocks will beat you and your quad to death before you finish the first lap.

your stock swinger will clam around the bearing carrier too, or crack in other places. If it doesnt you arent riding very hard. A burgard +2 will solve this..

Definitely get a-arms and shocks, new axle. Get some MX tires, nerfs, and a tethered killswitch. I'd definitely talk to roostin_dale about those a-arms he was talking about. Sounds like a good deal, considering I just spent like $1,600 on my new LT setup.

roostin_dale
07-07-2005, 11:47 AM
The set-up i am talking about should be very good. He use to run the Burgard +4 LT a-arms...but he will be switching to these now...

The burgard +4 LT's are really nice, but if oyu know alot about your suspension and you know what it should feel like, it will be hard to get them setup right. My friend use to have them and weighed about 160-170lbs and with the stiffest springs Elka had and the correct valving, the were still soft due to the huge leverage ratio. He had elka come up and look at them theirselves at one national event...IM not sure what happend in the end though, i dont know if he got them worked out or not

Aye.. it really takes a LOT of work to make a 300ex Motocrossable. They just weren't built for it.

Trading up is always the best option. Doesn't take NEAR as much work or $$$ to make a 400ex or 450r MXable.

well i race mx and heres my set up so far 18inch kend klaw rears 21inch front itp holeshot xcrs, 400ex front frame modified to make it work and handle amazing best thing i did so far, gusset the frame trust me you'll need 2 b4 its 2 late, Whoite Brothers E Series Silencer and Power Filter.
My Plans This winter are to buy a LSR Axle and Axle Nut, Get another set of 18 inch tires buy a set of used 300-450r rear wheels or bead locks, get a head pipe, get DG VPro or Ac Racing Bumper, maybe paint the frame or powder coat it and any thing such as swing arm aarms handlebar clamps and what not and hopefully some maier fenders.

USE thefactory wheels or get honda factory whees or beadlocks trust me itps suck 4 durability use tire inflation foam i have no flats yet, you'll have to rigg up the kill switch with a "backwards" relay, cut the fenders, like every1s sayin get some kind of suspenisn if not you'll likely bust a front shock off, Nerf Bars are a must, a bumper is a good idea. Like make sure your numbers are visible cause for some od reason which is crap the scorers can't read pur numbers for some od reason a bunch of bs there o well good luck in racin

The kid is 13 he doesn't smoke and trust me he has cleared it, but it is only like 75-80 ft. Not 90 but he has definatly cleared it. Maybe you should grow some balls and quick talking smack and get off a 300 and get on a big boy's bike

lmfao! I am with rodenburg (sp).

A good rider on a stock 300ex can womp 300's and 400's with money invested and an unskilled rider. Practice, get good, and then buy what is neccessary for the rules at that track (nerfs, tether kill) and then I woukd put on stock 400ex rear tires - cheap and hook as good as any aftermarket tires.

Oh alright hardass, what kinda quad do you have, huh???? FYI I wasnt talkin ****, I was just saying that it is impossible to clear a 90 foot tabletop on a stock 300ex. I bet your one of those people with the 400ex that has a slipon, and they think they are hot chit. Well if thats what you have, bring that sissy 400 up here to PA and me and my "little 330" will show you what ridins about, track and drag.

I run open novice and kick some open expert a** all day long you tell me where you ride at i will make it a point to come down there and show you whos got a fast quad in drag and motx or coss country if you like. Tell me where you ride what days there open and when your gonna be there.I dominate 450 all day long that have motor and bolt on performance parts. And i am proud to say i have 400ex that dominates every other 450 i have went against

Well, to be fair.. he said the "launched off of 90ft table tops with stock suspension". He never said he landed it. lol. ;)

A 3 ft tall to flat landing will bottom out a stock 300ex's suspension.

I dont want pics.. I want Video of the landing.. lol ;) That's gotta be painful. Even if hes on a 400ex.. I still wanna see it.

I bet it's jsut a really fast shallow tabletop.. Probably not getting more than 4-5ft above the top of the ramp-up. So, It's perfectly beleivable on a 400ex. Not a 300. ;)

I like hangtime vs' speed. But, everyones different. My riding partner likes the shallow fast jumps as well. He's on a stock suspended 300ex. But, he can't clear more than 35 ft (3-4ft rise) on a tabletop w/o it bottoming out HARD.

so your telling me you jump 90 feet, to flat landing (which is rediculous enough) with STOCK shocks, on a 300ex? laff.

Kansas City area (Blue Springs to be exact). 2hr drive to anywhere legal to ride. Sucks.. lol.

Usually ride in Deepwater (Truman Lake) or Columbia (Finger Lakes)

All I know is when I swap rides with my riding partner (I have Works Dual Rates w/ remotes in all 3 locations, and he has Stockers.) everytime I get that thing more then 3ft of the ground I nut myself on his tank.. lol. Then think goes Ka-BLAM!!!. Can't be healthy.. lol.

Granted stock 400ex's have much better suspension than a 300ex. But if you are hitting it.. it's gotta hit hard! There's no way your not bottoming out hard on an 90ft TT. If your able to hold on to that thing.. you got my respect.. lol. :D

I certianly don't have the gonads to jump a stocker that far on hardpack.
