OK, I have a TCS dual rate, re valued, stock shock on my 450R.

What I want to know is how much of the travel should be as zero pre load.

By raising and lowering the spring you change not only the ride height, but also the percentage of total stock travel which is ‘sag’ vs. ‘loaded’.

For example if the standard shock gives +/- 9 inches travel – how many inches should be as ‘sag’?

I have been using over 4 inches to keep the bike low, but this has compromised the travel in the suspension leading to a harsh ride. I have been thinking about reducing it to 3 inches?

Does anyone know, is there a rule of thumb how much of your rear shock travel should be as ‘sag’?

We run PEP and AXIS shocks which provide 10.25 of travel, and we typically use about 3" for free sag and then another 2-3" for loaded(rider on the bike).
