hotcams stage 1 is for bottom to mid but you will lose a little top , hotcams stage 2 is for mid to top but also adds a little bottom but it takes nothing away , the majority of the riders on here run a stage 2 hotcams or a hrc cam.

It sorta comes on like a two stroke.

I didn't lose any bottom , i actually gained but that is on a 450r , i don't know if it would be any different on a 400ex.

many of the riders on here have the old stage 2 new stage 3. i would wait for the new stage 2. it will give all around gains. stage 1 you dont loose any bottom end but you gain alittle mid and top and stage 3 u loose some bottom and gain mid and top.

Has anyone suffered any ill results from loosing the decompression clutch on the stock cam?

I put the stage two hotcam in my 400ex. I also did full portwork with and thing is ridiculous. I dont see why you would want it any faster mine does wheelies in 5 it is also a 440 so!!!! That bike is too fast for the stock shocks on it. plan for an upgrade in suspension. To put a cam in a 400 ex is a little tricky the piston has to be all the way up there is a T that you can see when its all the way up and the gear on the cam must say out on the top with the two lines lined up make sure your cam is ready to open the inatke valves. I wouldnt try this w/ out a manual in less your used to the four strokes and knowing what is going on as an engine turns. I would say it is rather confusing if you never did it w/out a manual Good luck Make sure you set the lash in metric with the hotcam "requires feeler gauges and very clean hands and parts"
