Hey, will yfz shocks work on a 400ex. And if not what mods would you have to do to make them work.

i dont think they will. i know the 450r's will.

I know the 450r shocks work but,I need to know if the yfz shocks will work because i can get them for a really good deal.

go out and buy them. see what you can do to make them fit, and if theres no way or just way to much work you can just sell them for what you paid.

yea i could do that but it helps to knw frist then you dont have to go throw all the crap of saling them.

Why don't you take off one of your stock shocks and go and compare them?

some one has to have done it.

they will probably fit but they wont work worth a crap, just ask Jeff at the Quadshop he can explain it for you:D

No, they won't work. Just look at the ends, they are totally different

oh really..... i had them on my old ex with +2 laegers and they worked great!!! they might be a little stiff for stock aarms tho.

it's kind of a pain to do, but not too bad. there are two ways to do it, either modify the shock(what i did), or make a new top shock mount for the frame.

i took the springs of the yfz shocks(and one of the stock ex shocks) and went to a machinist. he then pushed out the bushings in the top mounts on all the shocks. you will either have to get some new bushings that will fit in the yfz shocks, and are the right width for the frame. but i just took a dremel, and cut the stock yfz bushings to the same width as the ex ones.

the machinist will then have to mill off the yfz top shock mounts(bottom is the same size as the ex) to the size of the ex one.

then, of course, press the new/modified bushings back in

i also cut a very small notch in the frame so the shock wouldn't hit. i don't know for sure if it would hit without cutting tho.

i used to have some up close pics, but i guess i lost em. but here is a few that did find

and do a little searching on here. you might find my other pics. and there was another guy on here that had them on his bike too, but he modded the frame instead of the shocks

i didnt say they wouldent fit, BUT the geometry is different, the stroke points are different andd all of them tedious things. i could explain it to the best of my ability but Jeff@ the quadshop could do it better.

Looks like a lot of work to put a yamaha stock shock on a honda. Sorry but I just don't see the point. But this would be a good thread to start a bunch of pointless arguing over the why's and why nots of interchanging parts from different brand quads :blah:

I am going to go ahead and get some yfz shocks becasue they are way nicer then 450r shocks

What makes you think that they are so much better just out of curiosity?

i honestly dont think they are any better, about the same. ive rode a few stock suspension YFZs and 450rs YFZs tend to bottom just as easy, they are set a little smoother from factory tho.

I put some on my 400ex and I like them alot better than stock it lowered my stace and has improved my handling. I have my preload ring all the way up and set the stiffness to the softest setting. All i did was used a bench grinder to grind down the sides until they fit and drimeled that back top braket for clearance. But i made sure i had a wet rag around the resvior and when it would get to hott i just stoped and let it cool down. it took a little while but it was well worth it. The only reasson I decided to try and put these shocks on instead of aftermarket or trx shocks was simply i got these at a very low price. Actually i had also barrowed some trx shock temporaily and i notced tht the yfz shock work noticably better, it sits lower and is a smother ride. They work wonderfully all the way soft in the dunes and for trail riding but on the track and for jumping they need to go up a click or 2, and i weigh about 150lbs.

to help clear up some misconceptions..
as "generic" shocks, it gives alot of leeway to what rider and quad they will accomodate..

once again, actually looking at the mounting and angle of compression, initial weight of the quad and the length of the shock, theyre so close that no is definitely not the answer.

the little (if any) geometry differences wont even be notable once the shock mounts are trimmed to fit.. again, it is a "generic" shock with a wide possibilty of riders.

is it the best? no.. but its a far cry better than stock 400ex shocks.

also note, the KFX400 shocks will also do fine as well.

SO should i get some works shocks or go for the yfz shocks. Becasue some works shocks sale for 200 something on ebay.

Get works, dont bother messing with the other shocks, KFX400 shocks are the exact same as 400ex shocks wont do any better

darkstar
07-04-2005, 10:57 AM
yea that is what i was think becasue no stock shock is that great.

He was talking about the new kfx shocks. they have the piggyback rezzies on them too and they are quite a bit nicer than the stock 400ex shocks. Get the works shocks, they are made for the particular machine, and valved for rider weight, and they will out perform the yfz shocks. I dont see how anyone would pay money for other quads stock shocks. I could understand it like sampleez said it but why not just buy some works...

forgot about KFX having rezzies now,,, my bad.

most of the works you find for sale aren't adjustable. i'm telling ya, this was a pretty dang good setup for the money. but remember, i had +2 aarms

actually, the 03-04 kfx/z have better shocks than the 400ex. when i had my z i put the front shocks on the 400ex and they were a little better than the ex's. not a lot but enought to tell a difference. jsut figured i would point that out.
