I have a 4oo ex with a 440 kit, stageII cam, K&N filter, & WB E series pipe. After the install of the cam and 440 kit the engine began to burn oil. I thought it was the wear on the vavles or guides but the machine shop said they were ok. The oil doesnt appear to be coming from the bottom end but Im not 100% sure.

Any thoughts??

I wouldn't worry about it most big bores burn a little oil.

Were burning quite a bit of oil, about a quart every two hours, and its pressurizing the oil resivior.

What do ya think??

I can thing of a few things.. but it would jsut be guesses.

1) Did you install heavy duty studs? If not, you may be having a head gasket issue. Upgrade studs and replace gasket. (very very common issue w/ the 440's)

2) Did you use break-in oil for your first 10 hours or so of running time? If you went straight to a high quality synthetic your rings may not have seated well. Then you may need to jsut rehone and replace the rings. Easily tested with a leakdown tester, rentable form the autoparts store.

Sounds like bad blow-by to me. You may want to tear it down and check the piston to cylinder clearance, and make sure the rings are installed correctly. If the valves were okay before, they're probably okay now. The majority of smoking (I hate to call it oil loss, since it's usually not very much) associated with valves happens right at start-up.
