first off great site here.

I just bought a '04 400ex and i like to run in mostly on wooded trails with a little mud/puddles and loose dirt. I just wanted to know what's the good intake setup to use without sacrificing the filters effectiveness on the loose stuff and dirt. I see a lot of K+N's out there, i just don't know how they work with the water and stuff. Also should i leave the lid alone or use something different. thanks

i ride those same conditions and when it is realy wet the lid is ony but when mostly dry you can run lid off with an outerwear.

I run a K&N with precharger and a custom airboxlid. It looks exactly like the ehs lid, But only cost my about 25 dollars.

same type of riding here. I have a K&N replacement filter with an outer wears, plus a K&N powerlid, (airbox lid thats a filter) with an outer wears. so i have good air flow plus double the filtering just incase. the stock intake going into the air box has been sealed up with a PVC cap and lots of silicon. runs good and sounds good you can hear the intake charging into the engine.

i am not going to say any of you are wrong with the k&n but i hate them and will never buy one again. i just had to rebuild my bike cause a piece ofsand or something got in my cylinder and put a huge scratch in it. it may flow more air but you will never notice the difference, i say get a uni or twin air to just be safe.
also i always oiled my filter so dont say thats the problem

did you put grease on the neck of it when it was put inot te boot? if not that would cause it becasue it doesnt have good tight seal.

i personally HATE K&N filters why you ask because they are GARBAGE and caused my banshee a $1200 motor rebuild crank pistons heads cylinders clutches and eerything i always run a Pro Design with the Pro Design filter its an amazing setup and i would get rid of the K&N on my 416 if i wasnt selling it

BTW K&N's are NOT good in water at all ! lol i found that out the hard way also with my first bikewhen i was 11

no but i run a aluminum airbox with the lid on. i understand a k&n can be as good as foam if you oil it every 20 minutes but whats the point when you can have a foam and oil it every other long ride and have it still do better

K&N = for your car......not for mud water, or any dirt offroad. they are gauze and let most polluants through the filter easily. i have the best of luck with UNI i love them, sware by them, and never has 1 motor fail that was running them, they flow as good as a K&N and if they flow 2% less then a k and N so what...! i would sacrifice proformance anyday for a sound clean motor. your air filter is your life blood of your motor, that and changing your oil, on a stock motor those 2 things will lead to trouble free years of fun and a UNscored cylinder wall....... once a K&Ns get wet they never seem to oil well again..... the only thing i run a K&N on is my car, truck, and my onroad gas Raceing R/C car....(clever design i made )

for like 28$ GET A UNI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have used K&N's in every thing i own. never had engine problems. as long as you clean and oil them you should never have a problem. for sealing the filter on the intake tube i always use silcon... Also even though the filter come oiled. i spray i little more on them.. I have a K&N in a 99 Ford F350 CREW CAB. with 100,000 plus miles no engine problems just clean and re-oiled every 20k miles.
