I changed the oil in my 400ex for the first time and now I get a film of oil on the bottom. I changed the rubber ring gasket and it still has a very minor leak. I don't see any damage on the cover or the mating surface and I think the bolt are plenty tight. Could they not be tight enough? I appreciate any input on this problem.

What washer? If you mean the rubber o-ring, then yes.

no there is also supposed to be a metal washer inside where the oil filter is.

I checked my Clymer manual and it says nothing about a metal washer. There is a spring, the oil filter and a rubber o-ring for the filter cover. Where does this metal washer go and why is it not listed in the manual?

yea i checked my service manual as well nothing. the head serivice guy at the local dealership said i should put one in between the cover and the filter. since there would be more pressure against the cover it would have a better seal.

make sure when you put the o ring on the cover there are no twist in the rubber. I had the same thing happen to me, took the cover off and noticed the o ring had a twist in it:rolleyes:
jak1389: you will love your 416,especially when colby gets done with it.
