Nothing wrong with the '01 raptor. The tranny problem is because people don't use the clutch to shift and it tears the dogs off of the gears(2nd gear usually).'02 and newer does have one more dog per gear than the '01.I race my '01 and haven't had any tranny problems yet.I run 102mm 12:1 piston,port/polish,web cam(race),+1 kibblewhite exhaust/intake valves

The gear ratio was changed starting with the '02 model. Thats why they have problems. Depending on if you are mechanically gifted, you can get an upgraded tranny kit for around $500. If a shop does it for you, it may run upwards of $1200. Plain and simple, the '01 Raptors are worth less, usually around $1000 less then the newer models.

As for the post saying there isn't anything wrong with the Raptors, (the 660R), they all have a starter clutch issue as well, ALL years. Make sure the bike isn't making any x-tra noises when it starts up. Also, make sure you use the choke whenever starting a "cold motor." This will eliminate a lean backfire, which causes the starter clutch to go out. If it needs to be replaced this is an additional $200-600 depending on if you go back with GYTR or another assembly (go with aftermarket, they have 2 or 3 springs vs the 1 on a stock assembly) and if you do the work yourself.
