i have a 60 something and i think a '79 wheelhorse. both great running machines. the 79 needed some piston rings recently.

we used to do garden tractory pulling, we ran the 10hp 850lb class, we used 10hp kohler engines that were bored out, had milled heads and high comp pistons, we used 2 1/2" pipe for stragiht pipe, not sure of any other internal mods but they ended up putting out like 20+hp on race gas. mine was an (early '50s??) jacobson, my brothers was an old wheel horse and my dad had a '70s craftsman, very fun hobby to get into

yeah , sounds like me and my bro lol, he had an after market rod and over sized Cam , he knows alot more about them when it comes to engines then i do. Kohlers are super good engines to go with , there really durable. it is fun !

kohlers are by far the best engine for pulling, there was a guy in the 14hp class that ran a wisconson engine, i swear the stroke on that thing musta been over a foot, he dominated his class and they eventually outlawed that eng for the class...garden tractor pulling is a blast and its a very cheap sport to get into, we built and painted (with automotive paint) all of our tractors for under $800 a peice and were always in the top 5 out of about 20 tractors
