McHenry, MD - The GNCC heads north to the Maryland Mountains for one of the most scenic races of the series with breath taking views of the Deep Creek Lake from the top of the Wisp Ski Resort Slopes, but don’t let the beautiful landscape foul you because the once the riders heads into the woods they will face some rocky terrain, but I will go into more detail on the track later.

Before riders head over to the Wisp Ski Resort they first need to signup and register across the street at the Fairgrounds, and only riders signing up to race will be allowed to drive over to the Wisp to park, and spectators will need to park at the Fairgrounds and take the Shuttle bus to and from the parking lot.

Because of the limited parking many got an early jump on heading out to the Wisp and arrived by noon on Friday.

Admin
06-24-2005, 09:52 PM
The registration line was really short early in the day, but later in the Afternoon the lines began to build as the bulk of the riders began to arrive.

Admin
06-24-2005, 09:58 PM
Once registered riders arrived at the track the search was on for a descent parking space as the Morning riders were directed to the West side of the parking Area while the Afternoon riders were directly to park on the East side.

By 2PM The whole side of the hill for the morning parking was almost full and the only level parking available was in the Hotel parking lot below, which is where many of the motorhomes were parked.

Admin
06-24-2005, 10:03 PM
Some riders were lucky enough to park right along the track, but many will need to carry everything from their vehicle to pit track side.

Admin
06-24-2005, 10:06 PM
The Wisp track layout the past two years has been fairly tame over the track layout for the first race held at the Wisp in 2002, but regardless, fresh tires are a most for this track because the ski slope hills are extremely slick and riders will need every bit of traction to make it to the top, so I am sure the ITP and Maxxis tire vendors will remain busy all weekend.

Admin
06-24-2005, 10:15 PM
Pro Rider, #6 Bryan Cook, mounted up a brand new pair of iRazors filled with Tireballs. If there is one track where Tireballs can make a difference in the race, the Wisp will take the top prize because I have seen riders without them go through 5 tires during a race especially in 2002 before anyone had Tireballs except William Yokley and Jeff Stoess when they were in the Proto-type phase.

As usual, the Elka crew where kept busy walking around the pits offering Elka riders some assistance in setting up their suspension properly for the race, which is truly appreciated by the riders.

Pro Rider #20 Kim Kuhnle, makes some final adjustments to the his Polaris Predator with the help of Wilson Racing.

ATVriders.com member & GNCC racer, Jonathan Shaff, received his Blingstar Helmet rack for winning Quad of the Month.

Racer Production gathered the majority of the women class riders Friday afternoon for a photo shoot for an upcoming Women of GNCC racing Calendar which they plan on releasing in the Fall.

Admin
06-24-2005, 10:39 PM
Alba Action, #202 Traci Cecco will also be included in the calendar.

Admin
06-24-2005, 10:43 PM
While the women were posing for photos, Bill Ballance & Chris Borich were up on the mountain also doing a photo shoot for some upcoming ads for their sponsors.

The rest of the riders made their way over to Tech inspection, and as you could tell by the dust, it was been extremely dry the past few weeks with only a few thunderstorms rolling in Wednesday night which brought some rain, but it won’t be enough to keep the dust down this weekend

Admin
06-24-2005, 10:44 PM
Stefanie Verkade headed over to Tech Inspection before it was too late, and she too headed back over with the rest of the women racers.

Admin
06-25-2005, 04:42 AM
After Tech Inspection, I decided it was time to check out what type of track the riders would face this year at the Wisp, and the track layout started out easy enough with some high speed field section on the novice ski slopes.

Admin
06-25-2005, 04:45 AM
At the top of the mountain, there has been some major changes since last year as many new homes have been built and they are also building an adventure park on the mountain top, so there is plenty of construction going on, so many section of the track have been changed and some of the construction area are now part of the track layout with some freshly cleared down hills, but riders better beware because of the drainage ditches dug into the ground to prevent runoff.

Admin
06-25-2005, 04:47 AM
Once the riders leave the open fields they will be faced with some freshly cut trails that have tree stumps and exposed rocks to negotiate

Admin
06-25-2005, 04:51 AM
The huge boulders on the side of the track as the riders enter the woods is just a sign of what is yet to come.

Admin
06-25-2005, 04:55 AM
I only had the opportunity to walk just a few miles of the track, but it looks like the track with the roughest it has been in the last few years, but I didn’t find any sections as bad as those included in 2002, but again, I didn’t walk the entire track, so I will know more tomorrow after the 1st lap.

Admin
06-25-2005, 05:02 AM
Personally, I don’t mind riding in the rocks besides the damage that it causes to my skidplates, tires, and wheels because I feel the rough tracks level the playing feel because it will take more than just horsepower to stay out front, and I have found that the harder you stay on the gas over the rocks the smoother the ride.

Admin
06-25-2005, 05:04 AM
Even though the fields sections are extremely dry and it will probably be dusty by the afternoon race, Buren Hamrick was able to find several mud puddles to throw into the mix back in the woods.

Admin
06-25-2005, 05:08 AM
Buren also freshly cut several new sections of track though the dense woods, which are extremely tight and rugged.

Admin

Check back throughout the day on Saturday for more updates from the track.

Morning Results

4 Stroke Stock Class riders once again dominated the Wisp with Mark Rhodes leading the way to the Overall win once again by several minutes after getting out front early and never looking back.

Meanwhile the battle was on between Chris Neal, Jarrod McClure, and Harlen Foley as these riders swapped positions back and forth throughout the race.

The track was even more brutal than expected and bottlenecks formed in several sections of the track which claimed several of the front runners including Traci Cecco as she found herself stuck on the side of the hill. Angel Atwell was able to get out front and pull away as a huge bottleneck had around 50 stopped. Mark Rhodes made it through early, and with Harlen Foley in 2nd place with Chris Neal right behind him.

Harlen was able to make it up the hill around Traci with Chris right behind him, but only a few hundred yards later Harlen caught his rear tire on a rock which sent him over the bars and flipping down the hill knocking him out of breath as Chris Neal rode by and checked on him. Harlen remounted his Suzuki and after he regained his breath and started the charge back after Chris.

Meanwhile, Jarrod McClure moved back in a battle with Harlen as they came upon bottleneck after bottleneck which had them swapping the 3rd overall spot back and forth. With only two miles to go, Harlen held 3rd Overall, but another bottleneck brought him to a stop while Jarrod found the quicker line and took over the spot.

Jarrod pulled a several second lead over Harlen as they headed to the finish line with Jarrod taking the final podium spot and Harlen finishing 4th overall

Angel Atwell took her first women's class win of the year easily after Traci ended up flipping as well and Stephanie Parton broke off her footpeg early in the race.

Doug Henke once again won the Utility Unlimited class and finished amongst the top riders.

The complete results from the Morning race will be posted shortly, so stayed tuned for live coverage from the afternoon race which we will attempt to bring you lap by lap.

I talked with Joe Borich today, and Chris does indeed has a broken Collar Bone, and they are going to let it heal naturally and he should be back to riding in around 4-8 weeks, which is the normal recovery time.

I am sorry that I haven't posted any photos yet today, but after the drive home, my back, ribs, and arm are now really sore and it is painful just to sit at the computer.

I have spent most of the afternoon on the couch because it hurts too much to sit up, and I hope to feel better tomorrow

It usually takes 6 weeks for a collar bone to heal. 8 to 12 weeks to get back to full strength. So probably not unless he gets it operated on and the doctors screw a plate to it. But I was under the impression that they were going to let it heal naturally.
