Do you do that for the TWIN airfilters?

youll never have to take that out any time you get a new filter

the twin air and the stock filter uses that metal cage. the uni filter comes with its own cage. the K&N filter is sturdy itself and doesn't use a cage. if you run stock or the twin air, you can actually just cut the front off the stock spark arrestor and use that for a sturdy clamp. this way you don't have the whole restrictive piece in the filter. the filter won't collapse so no need to worry.

I was thinking of cuting out some of that cage on my twin air, but my friend said that the cage acts as a spark arestor so that when the quad backfires it wont catch your filter on fire. is this true or is it ok to cut some of it out.

not sure but i rember reding in a dirt bike magazine that twin air is made out of a speacial meterial that is flame resistant and its ment for you to take out the back fire screeen i did it on my yz250f a year ago and havent had ne problems

that does act as a spark arrestor. however, the sparks filters for the 450r actually eliminate the whole cage itself. i would get rid of it.

It will keep the oil on your filter from catchign fire... but IMHO.. if your shooting flames through your carb.. I'd be more worried about the gas in the Float Bowl exploding than a filter catching on fire.. lol.

Back Fire through the carb beand you have some SERIOUS timing issues, or blown valves. So, 99.999% of the time it will be a non-issue.

It's a lawyer thing, just like the reverse lever on the 300ex.

well that sounds good then, I think Ill get my dremel out and cut a few peices out of the screen so that it will still be strong enough to support the filter.

the only piece you need is the metal band where the filter mounts too. i talked to a few companies that ran filters with nothing in them and they said the filters won't collapse, even with the highest horsepower 450r engines. i would cut the whole screen out myself but it is up to you. the other option you have is to go buy a uni filter. this comes with its own cage and it much more free flowing.
