What a shame.. We all have demons to face, and some times the pressures of life can seem unbearable. But there is always a solution.
Sadly, we will never really know what drove Steel-rod to his breaking point. Kelly was a great guy to know. He will be missed by all of us who knew him.
His family will be in our prayers. And hopefully his little girl will come to terms with this tragedy and be a stonger person for it.
Kelly was not only a very talented rider, but was a very good auto technician as well. His death leaves a void in many lives that cannot be filled.:(

i cant believe this.

i didnt know him personaly but loved the stuff he did. i hate hearing that someone has commited suicide. i just feel so bad when someone feels that there life is too bad to go on. we all know there is better to come after the bad, its just some people cant see that.

i feel like posting the lyrics of one of my most favorite and deepest songs of all time. the words of this song really touch me.

beyond the gray sky

It is a gift I know
A moment of bliss that we hold
A firecracker flash of light then on
To the next plane soul remain
Come along if you dare
It's gonna be that you're scared
Lovely life I thank you
For the reason to see the pain through

Light a candle for the dead
The wick is burning returning what we have
It's who we are
We'll reach you if you're beyond the furthest star

Don't give up the fight to stay alive and even if
you have to
Find the reason of another's pain if they lose you
If not for your self then those around who care
like I do
One day you'll see the clear blue

Beyond the Gray Sky
Light a candle...
The wick...
It's who we are...

One day youíll see the clear blue
Beyond the Gray Sky

I can't believe you didnít call
What made you want to end it all
Wasn't there something I should have tried
To help you see beyond the gray sky

RIP kelly!:(

I find it so incredibly hard to believe that Kelly Chang was suicidal. The thought that he may have been sad enough to do hurt himself does not fit with the person that I have grown to know.

I really loved this kid so much.

Kelly came into our lives four years ago. Dana met him after talking to him online for a few months. They hooked up for some island riding back when freestyle was something that was only done in our backyard. Kelly was always so positive and happy. He told it like it is, but never in a mean way. When I showed up in Maui with 90 cheerleaders, and their massive luggage, Kelly and a friend showed up with trucks to get all our junk on the other side of the island and refused to take any money for gas or even let me take him to dinner. He was just like that.

He would try anything, in waves. He wouldn't just go out and hit something without trying all the little steps before. He was a careful rider who really didn't make that many mistakes.

I loved the way that just out of the blue he would call me on my cell and say, 'Mamma Creech'. We would end up talking for 40 minutes on just how life is here or there. He was looking forward to our cheer team coming to the Big Island next year. He was threatening to take us all riding!

Nothing could keep him down. He broke his leg so bad they had to put a steel rod in it (hence the nickname 'Steel Rod'). He wrote me stories on this that we were going to try to incorporate into a column for him. He was riding so fast after this injury. More cautious for a short period, but riding all the same.

He had respect for people. I never once saw or heard Kelly be rude to anyone. He took the time to talk with you. You know what I mean about really talk WITH you. He actually was interested in what the other person had to say.

He liked little kids. I am not even sure what he called little ones, it was a Hawaiian name, but you could tell he really liked them because he took so much time to make sure the time they got to meet 'Steel Rod' Kelly the famous Hawaiian freestyler, they would remember how cool he was.

What happened to Kelly will affect many of us. I am affected. My family is. He was very valued. He was very loved. Please don't make assumptions over his passing. We do not know what be the final call when all the cards fall into place. My heart goes out to his family. The Creech family will be praying for your pain to ease.

Please think on what Kelly was for the sport as well as his family and friends. Do not dwell on his passing.

I am in complete shock to hear this news, and he will truly be missed. Kelly and I would talk every few months about everything for usually atleast an hour, and he would always end his conversation with when am I coming down to Hawaii to spend a week with him, and I would always say I was too busy right now, maybe next year.

My opportunity to hang out with Kelly for the week will be forever lost, but he will never be forgotten especially on those late nights when I am up working at 2AM in the morning, and I know most of my friends are in bed, but it is only 8 or 9 PM in Hawaii depending on the month, so I would give him a call.

For all those that never had the opportunity to meet Kelly missed on knowing a great guy, and his passing brings to light our mortality, so don’t forget to cherish each an everyday you have with friends and family because one of them or yourself may not be here tomorrow.

RIP Kelly Chang :(

Kelly was one of the nicest people I have met. I mean that too, not just saying **** right now... He was they kind of person that REALLY did care about somebody else, not fake up front. He was real like that. I respected him a lot for it. He was genuine.

Kelly just told it like it is the first time. No messing around and beating around the bush. Just out with it, I love peole like that. You could never call him on anything, cuz the guy just spoke that truth...

I want to say this too, Kelly LOVED his daughter! Everytime he'd talk about her you could tell that Kelly would do ANYTHING for her. He was so proud to say that she was HIS daughter. I think he rewound and played and slow-mo'd Huevos about 10 times for me one night so I could see a 3 second shot of her. It was important to him that peole know how great she is.

And like Jon said. Kelly had some serious heart for ATV freestyle. I can't think of anybody else that could or even WOULD put that much effort, heart and soul into ATV riding. Whatever it was, Kelly had it... And a lot of it.

I'm going to miss the random calls from Chang, him telling me to pack my $hit up and to get my *** down there. He was always good for that.

Kellys compassion, talent and determination will be missed by us all. My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.

We'll miss you Chang...

kelly sure sounds like a great guy from the responses submitted, but he killed himself. it was not a tragic accident or a stunt gone wrong.

take a good look at what he left behind and keep that thought in the front of your mind. his daughter now has to grow up fatherless. his family has a hole torn in it.

TIA Kelly Chang lived in Hawaii (sp?). He was a great and influential free style rider, he rode with Jon and Derek Guetter, Garrett Englestad, and helped create a new freestyle orginization called Akraix. Kelly appeared in Huevos 4, in the Hawaii segment, and was also included in "The Bombsquad" produced soon after Huevos 7 was released.

well i dont know what happened but usually the people that have the best grip on life, they always appear happy , well tempered etc are just unhappy people , sometimes life can lose its appeal when you have a handle on things no matter how exciting things appear, not everyone is mentally bullet proof things begin to fall apart slowly and you begin to breakdown, you cant look down upon a guy because his maker didnt make him as mentally strong as you, look at the kids just on here that adored him, he lead a life his freinds and family can be proud of no matter how it ended or why, if its suicide by no means was it because of a sole reason, give the guy and his family some respect before you start hounding for information, and putting your thoughts and opinions down, when it comes down to it, hes gone and hes missed, hes not coming back and you judging decisions others make is just disrespectful to him and his family and everyone who knows him personally ,im sure everyone else is asking themselves enough questions and really dont care to hear yours

acting like a cool respectable adult and being a dickhead at the same time doesnt work, if whatever he had going on inside him drove him to end his life, i feel bad for him for living with that, because your on here posting about it you obviously didnt deal with something like he did, maybe its the only way he thought he could be at peace

rip, condolences (sp) to his freinds and family , dan and the akraix guys im sure kelly knows up there your all gonna make him remembered

People who commit suicide are not bad. What alot of people do not understand is that no matter how great u think a persons life is there is alot you do not know about that person. There may be things that they are missing that are more important than material things they own or other things. People should not be getting put down for commiting suicide but instead people should think about ones surrounding which have put such a big impact on someones life to drive them to believe suicde is the only answer.

It is very sad and people should use this experience and apply it to their own lives. Look at the people around you and stop thinking for yourself once in a while. Dont think somebody is happy because they have things you love, but try to see if there is anything that you are overlooking that may drive that person to depression.

Also, if you are depressed take a look at this thread and realize that no matter how bad your life is there is always people who care about you.

I agree with some people about his daughter, right away she was the main thing i was shocked about. but you also have to think deeper than just, "he left her behind." There may be some things you do not know going on so it could be very insensitve to post about them.

RIP Kelly Chang. My condolences go out to all of his friends and family and especialy his daughter.

Trust me, i went thru his mind more than a dozen times, its not easy to do what he did... Sometimes life deals you just the right amount of pain to drive you to do this.. I know for a fact i was in the very same position when my daughter died at 4 from Astma, luckily people knew i was capable of doing it so they stayed around all the time until i got a grip.

RIP Dude, saw some of the vids, very tallented guy. But from every picture i have seen from him, it can be seen somethings bothering him.

SRH and Ralph, very well said.....Pappy, until you know what it's like to be in such a dark place as Kelly was in, don't be so quick to judge, along with all your little followers.....suicide isn't an act of selfishness, it's an act of desperation due to a DISEASE called DEPRESSION....just like people die from cancer and other terminal illnesses.....it's a very sad lost no matter how you put it.....
