i can get my frame done a candy red for 170 without a clear coat and 240 with a clear coat. is the clear coat needed?

no, but it does add alot of gloss and another layer of protection.

do you usually put a clear coat on?

it depends on the part, but on frames i havent used clear in the past few years on most trans colors. all a trans color is, is a tinted clear.
