Hey Everyone,

My posting is becoming common here, because I honestly dont have much of a clue to what I am doing. But I decided to build a 250r and damnet thats what I intend to do. So for the hundreth and not last question...Which sprockets and chain do I need? I have been looking at some chains, and I have seen o-ring chains, and non o-ring chains..Why the flip would a chain need a o-ring? Which kind do I need?

Now for the sprockets.
Can someone tell me what the numbers are? I know they are the amount of teeth on the gear, I think its the more teeth the slower but faster acceleration you have, am I right? Whats a good number to get, I dont want to be overly low or high, I do want my gearing to allow me to get in the 80's, with a 310? but I dont wanna loose my low end, can someone please point me in the right direction. Thanks

More teeth on front equals more speed, less on front = more power.Works opposite on rear.Stock gearing was 13/39 on the 86-87 and 13/38 on the 88-89.i think that going up or down 1 tooth on the front has the same effect as moving 3 on the rear. For the speed your after you might try 14/38 or 15/38.

Thanks for you help.

Does the two numbers like 15/38= Front/Back?

yep.

Try the 13/38, if you still want low end, you'll have to compromise a little on top.

Go 15/40 and use a non-o-ring chain. With 15/40 you will have more bottom end, but you will be sacrificing some top end. I believe my bike is 15/36. That gives me a lot of Top end. Dont go under that casue it will suck stock. The smaller your rear sprocket, the more top speed you have, while the larger it is the more acceleration you will have. For the fronts it is reverse.

it also depends on how much you weigh i am 200 and i run a 12/36 now i can get into 6th gear without any bogging down it works great it trails and climbing .

I would say, if u have motor work, run 14/38. if not, use the stock gearing 13/38. I ran both with my worked motor, and i noticed the 13 tooth i had to shift alot more, where as the 14 i didnt have to shift as much, i could stay in one gear longer, but then in corners i did have to use a bit more clutch. but i guess it works for me.

I used 14/39 on my trx and then I used 14/38 on the atc. I switched to 14/39 and once I got my ported cylinder went back to 14/38, I used 14/38 with my 330 and I use it now with my 310pv. my friends bike uses 15/37 and it is very annoying to me, you have to scream the bike to make power, but you don't shift that much. With 14/39 you are always shifting and the same with 14/38. It matters what you like, power now out of the corners or feathering the cluth and coming out of the corner in a high gear. I personally like to have power right out of the corner and shift immediatly after the corner.

Thanks alot, I know I like shifting and having costant control of my gears...I never like to be inbetween a gear either.....so I will go with 14/38....This will give me more bottom, correct?

with my motor mods and the 14/38, I have incredible bottom to mid, but also I have a pv clyinder. go with 13/38 if you want all low end(lots of shifting), 14/38 or 39 if you want low to mid 38 being better top, and I can't imagine using a 15t for mx, but people do.

Rear tire size will also have a big effect on what gearing you use. With a 310, a 14 front and 38 rear should be fine. I am assuming you are using it as a play bike???

I live in Ruston, Louisiana, its I actually live 5 minutes from TECH..I will go with the non oring because I am gunna try to stay out of the mud....Not sure on the gearing I want really, I guess I gotta find my cylinder first, I know I will be at or over 265 though. and the rears will be 18 or 19
