Once again, Timberline Ski resort was home to the Koontz Adventure Series (http://www.koontzadventures.com) . Several races are held here throughout the year, each with more to offer then just racing. A pre race party on friday and a post race party on saturday with food, drink and a jammin' live band!

Paul Koontz does his best to offer something for everyone and is really working hard to promote our sport. If you ever want to race in a series that encompasses everyone, his will do it!

One family know in the koontz Series is that of the Sturdivant's. My wife commented today that she can not remember ever walking up to them and not being greeted with a handshake and a big smile.

Here, the head Sturdivant and ace wrench puts the final touches on Brandon's R

ATVriders.com member and all around good guy "CletusEX" arrived to get himself ready for the Wisp GNCC next weekend.

Pappy
06-18-2005, 06:36 PM
Ofcourse Cletus would not have made the trip from Maryland if not for a 6 am encouragement call from this feller,Doctorags:devil:

Pappy
06-18-2005, 06:37 PM
Jonathan Sheets sits aboard his new 450R and makes ready for todays event. He is plenty fast on his 400ex, so I expected good things for him today!

Pappy
06-18-2005, 06:40 PM
When it comes to XC racing and the Koontz Series, this young man is at the top of everyone's pre race chat. Brent Sturdivant, well lets just say that no matter how good you are, when you come to race Koontz you will have him to deal with;)

The boy is fast and is hard to beat.

Pappy
06-18-2005, 06:41 PM
The dual edge sword of this series is the other brother, Brandon Sturdivant now forever known as "Hollywood"

Pappy
06-18-2005, 06:46 PM
Another great rider that hardly ever misses a race is David Collins.

Pappy
06-18-2005, 06:51 PM
The Pro/A start was fast as usual, with Brent Sturdivant edging out a hard charging Kurt McGill

Pappy
06-18-2005, 06:54 PM
It sure seemed that the only dust on the netire track was right at the start area, preventing multiple start photo's.

As the different classes were turned loose, the first few riders offered the best photo's

Pappy
06-18-2005, 06:55 PM
Dust and pictures usually do not mix

Pappy
06-18-2005, 06:57 PM
A breeze wisked away the dust for another quad to be captured as the rider heads up the hill.

Pappy
06-18-2005, 06:58 PM
Wave after wave began thier assualt on todays course, which consisted of the huge double black diamond hill climb!

Pappy
06-18-2005, 06:59 PM
Nearing the completion of lap 1, Brent S. was barely leading McGill

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:00 PM
Brent was not slowing down for noone:macho

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:02 PM
Riders started coming thru the course, some showing signs of a rough first lap, others just on the gas hard:macho

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:04 PM
This Honda rider pours on the throttle as the YFZ rider looks for an opening

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:06 PM
The ski lift was in operation and I took full advantage of its ability to take me to the top of this mountain!

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:18 PM
One of the 1st riders I encountered from my perch highatop the track was Jonathan Sheets

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:25 PM
Now I am terrified of hieghts, so getting these pics was an accomplishment:scary:

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:27 PM
CletusEX was having a good time!

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:28 PM
I had to turn around in that little lift chair and lean over the back to get this shot of Brent:p

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:29 PM
McGill was at best 5 seconds behind Brent on lap 3

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:32 PM
I was getting kind of sea sick, the cart was swaying and looking thru the lens was almost too much. And when the quads would hit a jump I thought I was going to blow chunks:p

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:34 PM
Finally back on the ground, I wanted to head over to the huge hillclimb. The top of the ridge is a wide open run and being 8 inches off the track can get hairy:D

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:35 PM
A good adage to live by is "take thier picture and maybe they wont run you down"

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:36 PM
Passing can be easy if the space allows and the slower rider gets over

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:38 PM
cletusEX makes another trip to the top

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:40 PM
I usually cant yell until after I snap the shot, but I try to give everyone I know a hollar. sometimes i get a hollar back, sometimes its a hand signal!

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:41 PM
A break in the tree's gave me a view from the top

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:43 PM
Women's class racer Angel Atwell was wringing out her set up getting ready for the Wisp.

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:44 PM
Collins ripping up the track

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:46 PM
As I aproached the top of the big hill, I could hear a quad coming fast. I did not know who it was but in no time McGill crested the top and started doing freestyle for me:p

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:48 PM
brent had dropped to 2nd place behind McGill and was hammer down trying to keep him in check

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:49 PM
Most of the front runners were spread out within a few minutes of each other, and you could keep track of them without seeing them in the woods below. Rolling Thunder:macho

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:51 PM
A big smile from Cletus let me know he was doing ok

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:53 PM
This track is not the tightest in most areas, but plenty of slick rocks and roots keep riders in check

Pappy
06-18-2005, 07:59 PM
Gabe Phillips had a great ride today until he snapped a ball joint on the last lap:(

Pappy
06-18-2005, 08:00 PM
This rider grabbed the holeshot in his class and seemed to be having a great ride today.

Pappy
06-18-2005, 08:02 PM
Atwell took the 5th spot in the pro class

Pappy
06-18-2005, 08:03 PM
With single line track, small openings lead to some serious action!

Pappy
06-18-2005, 08:04 PM
McGill still hammering with 2 to go

Pappy
06-18-2005, 08:05 PM
Brent was doing all he could to run McGill down

Pappy
06-18-2005, 08:06 PM
The best "almost" of the day:p

Pappy
06-18-2005, 08:08 PM
i do believe a tow will be needed

Pappy
06-18-2005, 08:09 PM
Why is more then +1 too much:chinese:

Pappy
06-18-2005, 08:10 PM
Runner up in the "almost" catagory:p

Pappy
06-18-2005, 08:12 PM
McGill on his way to the overall win finishing just ahead of Brent Sturdivant. It was great watching the many battles out there today!

cletusEX
06-18-2005, 08:29 PM
Awesome pictures and it's always cool to talk with ya. That track was sweet. I struggled all day with carb problems but used the race to try and get it dialed in for Wisp (until my clutch let go on the hillclimb:( ) My brother ended up 2nd in our class and 9th overall. That's him in the best "almost" picture. Right after that he ran his leg over.:p He lapped me right before that but I was staying with him. I guess the pressure got to him.:D Yeah right! Anyways see ya'll at the Wisp.

Pappy
06-18-2005, 08:41 PM
It was awesome as usually seeing everyone.

There was a bad wreck after the start that resulted in a rider being lifeflighted out. if anyone gets info on this rider and his condition, please post it.

Chino
06-18-2005, 08:44 PM

06-19-2005, 03:48 PM
As always, great pics. I especially like the one of my ugly mug with my eyes closed. I guess I need to get some sunglasses like "Hollywood" over there.

I also don't think this was the first time I "almost" crashed trying to get a nice shot for the camera. If you get a chance, can you shoot the his res my direction...danregalia@hotmail.com.

Next time were up at Tomahawk, I'll have to let you know. Real interested in seeing that new Lonestar setup. Maybe time to drop a few more dollars into the bike.

Pappy
06-20-2005, 05:46 AM
I was chatting with this riders nephew, he explained this was his first race in 2 years since breaking his leg. He was having clutch problems but it was great seeing him not giving up!

Pappy
06-20-2005, 05:48 AM
Congrats on the great finish Dan!

pappy,
Awesome coverage once again. Everyone really enjoys the photos you post. If you have any more photos please post them i didn't see any of my new white yfz. I was hoping to show my neice some action shots.

Pappy
06-20-2005, 12:09 PM
Thanks guys, we do really try and bring back some memories for everyone and maybe inspire some others to get to these events!

Pappy
06-20-2005, 12:11 PM
I must apologize, I did not get the number of pictures I would have liked. With the dark clouds rolling in and the foliage on the tree's, the setting was very dark. I try and NOT use my flash in an area that may cause issues with riders vision.

Pappy
06-20-2005, 12:12 PM
The aerial shots turned out pretty sweet. If i would have had another shooter on the ground, I would have stayed on the lift the entire race:D

Pappy
06-20-2005, 12:16 PM
The next race at Timberline, I promise I will take a few wide angle lenses to the top and really try and show everyone the view from up there

Pappy
06-20-2005, 12:17 PM
many riders looked wide-eye'd before the run up the hill

Pappy
06-20-2005, 12:20 PM
There is not much room to get photos in some spots...I thank everyone who did not run me down:devil:

Pappy
06-20-2005, 12:21 PM
But tight shots can look good also:p

Pappy
06-20-2005, 12:23 PM

06-20-2005, 12:24 PM

Pappy
06-20-2005, 12:26 PM
There were some sections that i bet those headlights came in handy!

Pappy
06-20-2005, 12:27 PM
This headlight set up looked pretty wicked coming thru the dark woods.

BSTURDIVANT
06-20-2005, 06:45 PM
Pappy thanks for the good pics as always! My dad said he never even seen you take his picture. He is always looking over our quads to make sure every thing is good to go, if it wasnt for him we would never make it!

Pappy
06-20-2005, 06:50 PM
No problem at all. I see his hard work and wanted to make sure he got in on some fame:p

Pappy
06-20-2005, 07:18 PM
Your brother sure took a shot at the start. Your pop said the exhaust was smashed completely closed:grr:

You asked for info on the rider that had to get lifeflighted out at the start. Well he shattered both jaws broke both cheeks broke his nose and one finger. He busted out most of his teeth and his main bone in his back i broke. They did some surgy to repair his face but they have to do some more. Also if they took him in at 7:30am this moring to put a 13inch long rod in his back.

GREAT PICS Pappy

That's terrible, But i'm glad he is okay. Please keep us updated on how he is doing. I believe we all like to see a lil action of a quad rolling or wiping out sometimes but i hate so see someone get hurt, espicially this severe. tell him we're thinking about him.

Pappy

You wanted a way to contact his family so if you would like to send them anything his name is Freddy Crowl here is his adress
P.O. Box 771
Davis,WV
26260

anything would be greatly appricated because his family does not have any source of income and he is expected to be in the hospital for atleast 2 more weeks and then his jaw will be wired shut for 6-8 weeks so it will be a while before he is able to return to work. Anything would help.

P.S. His wife's name is Mellissa

I will keep everyone posted on how he is doing.

Pappy
06-24-2005, 09:42 PM
thank you for getting the info. i will be dropping a card and a check in the mail for him.

if i understood correctly, did he not just get out of the military or boot camp?

Dustin
06-25-2005, 05:01 PM
Thats correct he was in the military for a couple of years but he got a medical discharge because something was wrong with his knee. I am sorry but you are unable to call him because he is ICU at Ruby Memorial Hospital and he does not have a phone in his room. I will post more info as i get it.

Dustin
06-29-2005, 07:42 PM
Miracuosly Fred got to come home! He got home on Tuesday about 10 pm. They are going to call him next week to start the physical therapy on his back in Morgantown. He has his jaws wired shut. He has to have them wired for 6-8 weeks. He has to eat everything through a straw. He will still have to undergo more surgury to finish his face and fix his teeth. He really aprreciates all the cards and letters he has received. Any monetary donations will be very helpful because he is going to be off work for about two months or longer. He is also going to be resposible for 20% of his hospital bill. Thank you again for all your support and I will keep you posted as I find out more.

Pappy
