I want to get a service manual but I'm not sure which one to get... I have heard varying opinions from people among different brands. What do you all use, and which would you reccomend? Thanks.

My understanding is that the official Honda manual is geared toward the experienced mechanic and the aftermarket manuals are for the everyday person.
I bought my Clymer manual from MotorcycleBooks (http://www.motorcyclebooks.com) For $22.00 + $5.00 s/h

I bought the clymer manual (from the same website) from the recomendation from people on this board and found it to be a very complete book. It might be a little overkill for what I need, as I hope I never need to go into the engine, but it's nice to know that the information is available should I need it.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate you're help. If you all reccommend the clymer I think that's what I should go with...espically considering it's cheaper than the official one from helm. As for being overkill, I want all the information that I need and then some. I'd rather not take it to a delership to get it fixed if I don't have to.... My aunt and uncle own the shop where I bought my 400 from, but I don't get that great of a deal to take it in for things that I can do myself.:D

I have the official Honda service manual. It explains thing pretty well too. I have done alot to my bike and I did it all myself.

The only thing I ran into that I couldn't (or didn't want to) understand was removing and installing valves.

Other than that lil prob the book is a straight walk through and it has everything you will ever need for sure.

I just got the Clymer manual from my local dealer today for $29.95 and it looks very good and detailed. It's Clymer book # M454

I ordered the OEM Manual but for some reason it was back ordered. The only reason I wanted it was for the specs and the fact the dealer was gonna give it to me . This motor is real simple to work on and the same basic concept since the late 70s. Its kinda funny that they have been using the same technology since then.

I like the Helm Manuals. Most dealers use this manual for service. It's very detailed and well illustrated.
