i have a 2003 250ex w/ HMF full system and i love that bike great for wheelies handles good it is a bit slow though

well momorial day weekend i went to the mountains wiht my frineds and the roads up there are reall long and straight and they had like 600 utilities and scamblers so on the roads i had a hard time keeping up and i wished i could go faster
well i get home and my step dad said he bought a nother toy and we were going to pick it up i get to it and see it is a 2004 400ex with nerfs it looks like its been run pretty hard but it looks good

my step dad says its his bike and hes not puting any aftermarket on it and me and my brother can share it sorta like ride it whenever

well i rode it and that thing haulss ***** its fun as stuff
(stalled her a couple of times aint use to a clutch)

well i was wandering the top speed of a stock 400ex i think its stock i dont know if theres any engine mods or not there is no exhaust and the gearing looks stock if the 400 has like a 14 tooth front i might be wrong on that though cuz i just glanced at it

the top speed of your 400 should depend on if you are really "Gittin' it" or you are just in 5th. it also matters what kind of surface you are on so it will be real hard to determine the top speed. but im sure someone out there will know

i was clocked at 109 KmH with my 400EX mods listed in sig.(thats about 65MPH)

you can go about 65 or 66

on payvment with aftermarket exaust, air box, rev box, and re jet. I was just barley loosing a 450r. I mean that he was probly going 1 or 2 mph faster. but he also had his gf on the back.

mustve been the smooth finish on the nerfs that help it cut the wind so you can get that kind of speed.. :D

according to this: http://home.earthlink.net/~gellett/400ex.htm
.. that seems about right..

no no no, that program is used to find out what size sprockets you should use when you change tire size.

soo.... why not?.. it does list tire speeds..
and if the ratios were accurate for stock, then theyd be accurate for any of the changes..
of course, the limiting factors would be same old things like drag coefficients from varying weights, surface, etc....
you know, the normal things..

Here let me give you several reasons...
1. I have had mine hitting the rev limiter in 5th gear which is 9300 rpms I think, this shows the speed for 8250.
2. It does not give input for mods
3. It does not give weight input, a 500lb guy riding this thing aint gonna get close to 68 mph
4. The title of the converter is "TRX400EX Tire Size / Sprocket Change Calculator"

Need anymore reasons?

So, where's al the guys that can run 120 on stock bikes, usually they eat these threads up. I have always heard bout 65 or so, but I have seen some close to stock ones with really light kids on them that probably did a little better than that.

Nah.. your limited by 1 thing on a quad when it comes to level straight line top speed. Your rev limiter.

Assuming you have all stock and you're gonna top out at about 65mph (hitting the limiter).

If you are 1 tooth down on the front and running 18" tires your gonna go slower at about 56mph.

If you're running stock gearing w/ 22" tires and a +1000rpm CDI you're gonna top out at about 72mph

Your hp isn't gonna affect your top speed until you start gearing tall enough to hit 80mph+ then wind resistance rotating weight etc... becomes an issue.

I did 72 on 20" tires 14/38 sprockets and stock rev limiter.

Sorry, forgot to add the note that my actual MPH numbers are not necessarily correct. I'm not discounting your claim at all.

I was simply stating that your top speed is going to change based on your revlimiter/gear ratios/tire size as opposed to rider weight, horsepower, gravel/asphault/dirt etc. Those all affect how fast you get to top speed not what the speed is (on your rev limited atv's anyway). Granted wheel spin on gravel will drop your top speed by 1-2 mph as opposed to asphault of course.

sorry, ive been away and hadnt had a chance to respond..( and i do enjoy a good arguement.. :) )

retorts:
1. then change the rpm for 9300
2. unless the mods affect the gear or tire ratios then it doesnt matter. (not accounting for weight of the rider..)
3. noone was asking about a 500lb guy, and although weight does matter, you still have a valid baseline thats probably based on a 150lb to 175lb rider.
4. so, they could call it whatever they want .. if the speed estimates were accurate for the stock ratios shown then theyll be as accurate for the changes that truly affect speed..

and yes i need more reasons.. it still seems relatively accurate from my own experiences and also from comments on this board..

as someone else mentioned, engine mods will only get you there faster and itll help to haul GF's..
