im going to give you a open minded un biased opinion the best i can

last weekend i rode a KFX 400 (Z400) and a stock 400ex, both bikes being stock i jumped them took them through whooped out sections and so on and so forth..... i give the nod to the 400ex in the whoops it just feels more stable and balanced period. the kfx was quicker by only a miniscule margin that it wasnt really noticable. the kfx has the better seat no denying that its cushy, opposed to the hard one of the 400ex. sliding and turning again went to the 400, i think because of the egro's im 6ft and i just felt more comfortable throwing the 400ex around then the kfx, the kfx's controlls dont feel as "SOLID" as the honda's i truely belive this is some thing you are paying for haveing the HONDA name, and this is coming from a used to be STRICTLY SUZUKI GUY. sure the kfx is quicker, but at the end of the day i was more comfortable on the 400ex, the first time i ever rode one i just kinda sat in it, opposed to on it, and felt almost at one with the bike, everything was were i wanted it, even the starter button just had a more solid feel then the kfx, this may sound stupid but in the long term it will hold togeather better i belive then a suzuki.

the only down fall to the 400ex is air cooling.....well to date i have run it in 100 degrees and never had it miss a beat, they are nice and easy to service, one cam instead of two and no liquid cooling lines to worry about!

on 1-10 here is my rateing

KFX

value-8
Whoop out sections-7.5
jumping- 8 hey stock suspension is just that
brakeing- 9
wheelieing- 10
sliding- 8.5
egros- 7
seat comfort-10
stability 8
motor power- 9

400ex

value-7
Whoop out sections-9
jumping-8
brakeing-9
wheelieing- 10
sliding- 10 it slides so predictabley
egros- 9
seat comfort-6 or 7, you only notice it when parked, i stand alot so its not a issue for me
stability- 9
motor power-8

KFX= 85
400ex= 86

really its preference but i just like that honda doesnt seem to have any major recalls....as suzuki did, first year z had bent axles, and broken frames......vinson has bad frames (wont admit) the shifter recall, and the KQ the reverse will fail on it, i own two honda quads, one suzuki bike and one suzuki quad, and i would say honda is made more solid, and has the nod for longevity is concerned.

theres my novel hope you enjoyed.

the rear shocks are identical, but the z has fully adjustable front rezzy shocks...but i donno if theres a big difference in the fronts

the frount shocks are a tad better for jumping because they are fully adjustable! i just say the 400ex feels more nimble because it seems to me it is!

What about price after bargaining is the honda cheaper?

In my area it seems you can get the better bargain on the Honda. For example, I negotiated a 450R down to $5895 out the door but ended out not making the purchase because my wife said I'd have to sell the 416EX and I just can't part with my EX. I see the '05 400EX's advertised for $5395 here, and I'm sure you could get them down from there.

if you like suzuki go with the Z
if you like honda go with the Ex

the Z is a little faster but the Ex is bulletproof

The parts is a little cheaper on the Ex thought

The z has a noticeable power advantage over the ex and the z revs higher and is watercooled wich is nice. But like the other guy said the ex is bulletproof. They started to make the ex in 1998 and have fixed all the errors with the quad so it is bassicly perfected.I have a 03 ex and i love it.There both great bikes.

I would go with the Z. There's just more potential there...
