Do I need to grease the rear hubs before I put them onto the axel?

YES, use the thickest grease u can find.

why do you need to grease the hubs before you put them back on? when i had my z400, i would never grease up the hubs before re-installment and i had no problems.

Well here's why I say do it... Friend of mine had a 400ex, well one of his hubs was just about stripped out on the axle. So he got a new axle and hubs. When we were taking the hubs off the old axle we noticed that the side that had stripped had no grease, and the side that was still in place nicely was greaded.
