I would suggest staying away from an Eclipse. Check out dsmtuners.com/forums if you want to find out why. I bought one (a 1st gen) and have had a ton of problems. Most other people have lots of problems as well. I don't race or beat the crap outta my car, just normal driving...things just keep going wrong. I would suggest a civic for a first car, just because Honda has awesome reliabilty and quality. Just my .02 cents.

I had a 94 Eclipse 1.8L SOHC non-turbo. Given it was beaten before I got it, I still had problems with it like no tomorrow. I changed the head gasket twice in 2 weeks (ended up having a cracked block from person before). Fun little car, great on gas too don't get me wrong. I think if you're on a tight budget like I was, it is perfect. I spent around 300 on it.

Deffinetly good on gas...at least was for me...I have the 2.0L N/T, and when I got the car it was getting about 28mpg, but at that time it had a leak in the flex pipe and I fixed that and now I'm only getting low 20s for mpg...I think it's time for a tune-up.

ya the eclipses have alot of problems except for the newer v6s and theyre pretty fast to the new ones are gonna be puttin out around 260hp and will run with evo's. Theyre supposed to be fast as hell.
and yes acura is made by honda but theyre cars are all called honda in japan the acura rsx in japan is the honda integra.

If the opinion of an Acura tech is worth anything, here is mine.
You couldnt give me a RSX. They're garbage. The ride sucks the blind spots are friggun huge and the road noise is so bad you cant drive it with out the tunes blaring so loud you go deaf.
And most importantly they are a mother ****er to work on. Every thing about them is a pain in the arse. Not a car I would reccomend for a first car.
If I were in your shoes Id be looking for an OBD2 Integra. A much better driving car, that is so easy to work on.
I just finished a long block swap on a RSX at work. Driver miss-shifted, went 6th to 3rd, and puched a hole in the block. Took me 16.5 hours to do the job I could have done on an integra in 7.0.
The best part is, Integras dont have that problem. ;)

yes i have actually,i really had a thing for them, but over the past year it kinda started to fade away,my dads account said to get a used car 3-5 years old though,i was just curious on some prices, lol i wish i can get 20 grand toghter for a 99 porsche boxster, but that is to much for a first car no doubt:(

Rx-8 are pretty quick, I drove one about 2 months ago. Will do helluva burnout. They also handle like a dream. Gotta love those rotary motors. You could look into a 97-01 Honda Prelude type SH, around 200-220 HP, look killer and ulimited mods, and you alway have that little boost a 5,500 RPM. :D

listen to this guy, acura/honda is the same thing, the RSX is not a great 1st car. although the K series motor is a beast once you reprogram it, and exaust, the gearbox can be missshifted and really cost you money since it wont be covered under warrenty. plus isnt a brand new RSX a little to expensive and too much HP for a begginer driver and a 1st car? kids usually dont have enough experience or responsibility to handle a car, esp a new none. usually most kids crash/wreck during the 1st year they have their licenes. eclipses are a headach, crank walk on the older ones and just being a mistsu product is another. thats one posted is pretty bad looking, the wheels, stickers and wing really push it to the riced out side.

the civic is a great car, easy to work on, great on gas, cheap on insurance and disposeable. plus if you descide to play with a civic, everything from a teg will bolt up and your dealing with a lighter car. or if you find a good teg, you can get a special edition or a gsr, have leather interior, sunroof and good gas milage.

I got rid of an eclipse about three years ago. It was a 2000 model. I liked it. The only prob I ever had was a transmission line and it was a recall!

That is just my .02 cents. The newer ones do not have the short-comings of the originals.

I'd say get a Toyota Celica GT-S, practically the same power as a RSX, i think the RSX's are a bit faster, but you will have way better quality.

dude, i'm not bashing the jap cars ( do have a G3 eclipse here, my sis's)

check out the GERMAN CARS, cheap, fasst, and very fun and very very reliable. I never regretted buying my Jetta. Sounds like a girls car eh? Grab yourself a MKIV 1.8Turbo jetta (2002.5 up thats the 180hp ones, 1999.5 TO 2002 are 150hp) and you will guarenteed smoke most of the cars you just named minus a type s rsx which isn't too far off. You can get a modded one already for no more than 15 grand, and stockies run around 10-15k all the time, that's for the new generation, you can get a suspended, chipped, exhausted, supercharged MKIII ( 1993-99.5) for around 10k no problem

check out www.vwvortex.com inthe classifieds you'll see!

tell ya the truth id stay away from the 4th gen eclipse. they allready had a recal on the brake system and are a whale for the money you spend not to mention they look the worst of all. for the gt model you could get the 350z for basicaly the same price which handles so much better and is overall faster and has a much better line of parts. i dont forsee the 4g eclipse market to be that great since the the 3g has a bad choice of aftermerket parts. btw i have the 3g egt which ill keep since i got a great deal on.

what does everyone think about having a stick shift as a first car?or should i go automatic?

DAB516
06-03-2005, 08:34 PM
If your looking to buy a sports car definitly go with a stick shift. If you don't down the road you will be kicking youself in the butt for not getting one. Also stay away from those Audi's it's like the #1 car that gay guys drive. Plus I love the Burnt Orange Z's also the Blue color. Check out the 05 GTO's you can't argue with the numbers they a putting out.

JDiablo

yea,how fast will i get used to it,i mean i've driven one but the rest just been automatic,it seems pretty easy, how is shifting in traffic?

Oh you said the wrong thing when you said mustangs are for girls.

Let me know when you want to race me in my Mustang GT.

DAB516
06-03-2005, 08:43 PM
It can get to be a pain in traffic. There will be times that you wish it were an auto. Once you get used to the feel of the clutch you'll have no problem with it. Its about the same as trying to drive a manual qaud for the first time. It takes alittle time but then its just natural.

JDiablo
06-03-2005, 08:45 PM
yea well i learned how to do that in one day of riding, sweet then, stick it is,thanks

im really digging the 350z,or rx8,think those are two much for a first car?

DAB516
06-03-2005, 08:45 PM
A sports car is the only car I would own as a manual. They are ment to be driven with manuals and are so much more fun with them.

DAB516
06-03-2005, 08:48 PM
Shouldn't be as long as your respectful of its power. The 350z and RX8 don't really have what I would consider breathtaking power. But they do have enough to get you in too trouble. Plus the RWD is alittle more dangerous than FWD.

Here's a list of car's I'm looking into right now in order:

1. GTO
2. Evo
3. 350Z
4. STI

JDiablo
06-03-2005, 08:51 PM
i really dont have a thing for FWD cars at the moment, right now this is my list

2.rx8
3.CTS
4.my parents ride until i get more money, lol

DAB516
06-03-2005, 08:56 PM
I'd personal go with option #4. I started off with my parents old Buick Regal. It took the beating I gave it and taught me to respect things. Then a year and a half later I got my Eclipse. It's also less you'll have to worry about being a new driver. Plus if you show your parents that you can take care of that it will show your ready for your own and they'll have alot more respect for you.

well i have small streets here....and my rents have a suburban so i really dont think that is the best option right now, that is why i want to get a smaller car,but i drive it on the roads up at my lakehouse all the time with no problems,v8 2?? odd horsepower i think so i think i should be good with a 350z maybe,i have to see
