im looking at making my 400 into a 416. whose piston should i go with and what compressin is best but also still allowing me to run on pump gas? is there anything i should really do when i put in a 416 like cam, or stuff like that. any suggestions to building a strong 416ex let me know, just please try to keep it all on the cheaper side without sacrificing quality, and reliability. thanks for any help.

Je 10.8:1 416 piston
hotcams stage two
CRF 450 timing chain
ported/polished head
you will have a nice running 416 then

doesnt the hotcams stage 2 increase mostly tope end? if so i think i would rather go with the stage 1 because i like torque:D. how much does a port and polish job cost? and what does it really do?

yup a hotcams stage one then, there are all diffrent kinds of port and polishing out there,i just got mine touched up a lil bit on both the intake and outake,on a stock motor you really wont benefit from it from what i hear, but on a modded motor it is very good
It basically lets more air/fuel into i think im not to sure how the port and polish goes,Pm mikeboone im sure he will fill you in

i have just heard better things about JE then the weisco pistons,i guess its just a personal preference

now with the whole boring idea, what would the cylinder be bored to like what mm? (i believe the stock bore is 85mm) and would i go out and get one size smaller and the rings would take up the space?

It is a good idea to get the piston before you bore it. Then you can take the piston and the cylinder to the shop and let them measure off the piston. P&P helps air flow, smoothing up the ports will allow the air to flow through them easier and increasing the port size will allow more air to flow through the ports. I had the head of my 400 ported and he took nearly a 12oz cup of metal out of it. Some ppl port different though, some make the ports smooth as possible, some make it a little more ripply, I think that is kinda like a poweraid spacer. It is supposed to help the fuel and air mix.

yes stock bore is 85mm, the 416 will make it 87mm

now is that the cylinder that is the 85mm or the cylinder? if the 416 is 87mm bore (guessing its the cylinder) would the piston be a size smaller, or the same exact size?

the piston is the same size, just tell them to bore it .080 over and order a 87mm JE 10.8:1 piston, a hotcams stage 3 (old stage 2) you won't regret it

would a hardend rod be a good idea or will i be fine with the stock one?

if you tell them to bore it .40 over then that will not be a 416 ! 416 is .80 over, anyway as was already said buy your piston then take it to the machine shop with your jug and they will mic. everything for the correct bore.
