i was thinking about getting a 14 tooth front sproket... i am a woods rider mostly but i do ride on this track in a field alot, it is like a mini moto-x track.... i am getting mad because i cant find a right gear... when im going through the tight stuff i am in like 2nd or 3rd... i keep switching between them constantly and i always have to downshift on turns or the atv will bog because i am in to high of a gear... also, when i get in 2nd the lowend sucks (has like barley any power compared to 1st) and then it hits mid and takes off? does this sound like all stock 400exs or just mine? im thinking a 14 tooth might help?? any suggestions?? ps-how much is a 14 tooth front sproket of good quality go for? 20$?

I'm dropping to a 13 tooth front gear. I have a 2005 400EX and it does the same thing. I'm sure I'll have to shift faster through the gears, but will be awesome on tight trail riding!

stock is 15/38, its a lot toquier. best setup (to me) for trails, i love it donnt have to downshift as much

on the 14/39 does it give you more or less power? speed more or less? will it fix that little problem about the 2nd gear thing?

on that gearing you will be able to feel the power of your engine. you will lose some topend (topspeed) but will gain bottom end. so all in all you will get up to speed a heck of a lot faster. and yes it will help with your problem

what do you think that big diffrence is between the 14/38 and the 14/39?

how much of a difference is there with a 14 and a 13 tooth front sprocket?

I wouldn;t run a 13. That would gear it really low. I think the new 05's have 14/39 gearing right? And they only do 55. I think an 04 does 67. This shows the difference in top speed gear changed made. I actually like the 15/38 gearing, mostly because I ride XC or sand. With my hmf, I can climb most hills in 3rd.

well i havent installed the 13 yet, so when i get to the dunes this weekend ill do my 1st run with the 14 then the next with the 13 then decide. im not really worried about top speed since all we do at the dunes is those tree shoots, some small hill climbs, and trails

i like to ride woods and i know exacly how you feel..

ive got 22" rear tires and it really made a difference when i dropped to the 14 tooth in front.. i could then run low to mid 3rd and 2nd felt much stronger..
i later tried a 37 tooth in back to get a little more speed, but ive decided that im going back to the 38..

this link will help..

see i think i have the same problem. i do mostly trail riding. so with a 14 in front i will feel a big diff. cuz everything is stock right know as far as chain and sprocket.

if i buy a 14 tooth i could just take my 15 off and put the 14 on just like that, easy without any modifications right? and i could switch back between the 14 and 15 right...?

go with the 14, when are u gonna need to use 5th gear pinned? think about it..........think about how much your in 1-3rd gear, and think about how much your in 5th gear....you, like most ppl probably hardly use 5th gear, their for u can sacrifice some of the speed in 5th, for alot more torque, bottom end, and acceleration.

It's well worth it, especially for trails. I ride trails, and was runnin 15T with 22inch rears, and it was killin me, so i went down to the 14T and i think its the best idea ive had in a long time, when my 22's wear out, i might go down to 20's for even more bottom end

Yes, ive heard many ppl say its just a pain cuz u have to constantly tighten your chain cuz it gets loose with such a small sprocket. You could downsize your rear tires and use 14/39-40 for more bottom end. But when u get to......i think its 40 on your rear sprocket, it ight rub the skid plate
