Its very easy to kick the 450r im 14 to and my friends 15 and they have all the motor work done to it. Its nothing to start them but what kind of oil do you plan to use? We used Honda oil on his 450r and it evaporates to quick which is what the honda dealer and mark baldwin told us. I'd go with a diffrent oil unless you want to be stopping alot w/e your riding and putting more in.

theres no problem with first gear yes first gear is little tall but put some 18's and you wont notice a thing trust me i read dirtwheels how they said so much bad things about the honda which none of them were true

Dirtwheels says it bogs in first gear which ya it will if your racing it and start out in first gear but nothings wrong with it

if your not going to race, ride hard or mod the 450r at all, why do you want it? there are a bunch of other atv's that will be better suited for your needs. the 400ex would have been perfect for what you are wanting to do.

it doesnt bog in first gear at all unless you are on the verge of stalling it then give it full throttle and its just a little hesitation. i start in second and it wont bog

I like the question, I lovvvvvvvvvvvve the 450r in every aspect I'm gonna mod it with rims,nerfs,grahpics,axel,a-arms and things like that but i dont want to make it faster becuase its good enough and i had a 400 slow imo i trail ride alot and love to rooost up those corners:macho

If you want to keep the ground clearance of the 20"s but have a shorter first gear to go slow on techincal trails, than drop the front sprocket to a 13 and you wont have a problem. The 13 is more for the trail rider in mind and helps a lot when the going get slow and tough. The mods you are planning of doing is great, but you will want a little more power after the first 10 hours. Definately get yourself a slip-on, jet kit, and maybe a new filter. BUT-----get an HRC airbox lid or use an outerwears instead of the stock lid, the intake is more than restrictive. Kick starter isn't a big deal once you get used to it and the quad is broken in, the first 4 or 5 hours may be a little harder to start and it will want to stall easier. This is normal on all bikes with a clutch, things just need to be broken in.

You will love it, no doubt. Change the engine oil every 10-15 hours and the tranny oil maybe everyother time. I too am a weekend warrior....well maybe more like a monthly warrior.

i a whole 5'5 at 124 pounds and the 450 fits me perfect! i love it. i do wish i was taller but i have a big advantaged on the 450. i love it. i got it when i was 14, i'm 16 now. it's easy to kick, even for me. when you get used to the kickstart, you can kick it over sitting down, it's no problem. i like the taller first gear. i got annoyed on my 400 getting stuck between shifting from first to second gear. it's a Honda, it'll last. change the oil every few months, put gas in it, and it'll go forever.
