Went to pick up my new used 450r and I had a heck of a time test riding it. I usually ride either a 400ex or a 350x on fields or trails. When I got to the place to pick up the atv the guy let me test ride it through the rockies swampiest and tightest trails I have ever rode. Well now I know why people complain about the 1st gear. I felt like a fool in front of the guy, I must have stalled 5 times. Anyway to the point what is the sprocket size front and rear of a stock 450r. And what could I expect if I went down a tooth in the front and up in the back? I really could care less about top speed so that is really not an issue? Any one tried this?

14/38 is stock I believe. A lot of people drop to a 13 on the front.

i ran 13/39 for a while, and thought it was way to low. i have a bone stock motor and this short gearing made it hard to keep it under controll.

Dropping down to a 13T makes a big diffrence. I did.

Thanks for the replies I need new sprockets, the guy put a new chain on it but not sprockets so I definitly gonna try the 13 I'm still thinking about bumping the back up too.

it takes some getting use to but first gear is fine for me on the track and trails just ride that clutch on the tight stuff

going down 1 in the front, is the same as going up 3 in the back, so try the 13 before you go bigger in back- it might be just right for ya...

or you could just drop in a 150.00$ 13:1 piston and the stock 14/38 gearing would be to short

dropping a tooth on the front was too much in my opinion, seemed like i was changing gears way too often. To fix this, i dropped a tooth on the rear, and it seems just about right.

i just got me a HMF slip-on exhaust & rejetted and it took away that problem

From what I have read I guess I will try the 13 out first. I'm defineitly not going to do any engine mods. That bike run tight as is and it is fast enough. It is just if you have tight and slow riding it is way too much clutch work than needed.
