2005 6hrs of ATV America - Kahoka, Mo

Well it was a beautiful day for a race, as John Pellan and Tom Prendergast discuss the days events. Weather was great....

The track was great.....

And the riders were getting ready. Although the turnout was far less than expected. Final count was 20 teams, including 3 Ironman entries. The morning youth race was cancelled due to lack of entries also.... so the 2 youth teams would be running with the older crowd.

Half an hour before the scheduled 11:00 start time, Tom called a riders meeting. Rules were discussed...

And track owner Mike Burkhart talked about the new sections of the track, which included many grass covered fields and trails.

The talking was done, and the bikes were lined up....

And the riders took there positions across from the quads....

Waiting for Mike to fire the starting gun..... or shotgun in this case.

The race starts with a sprint to the bikes... although one Ironman competitor had the 'long haul' in mind and walked to his quad.:D

And then headed down the gravel drive infront of the pits and into the woods.

They made their way out of the woods and headed toward the mx track. Ryan Smith, an Ironman rider, was one of the first to come through!

But only for a moment.... the steep uphill section of the mx track was only a path back off into the woods.

To the first big jump, where the first rider for Team Outlaw Atv Customs, the only Pro class entry, airs it out good!

A u-turn at the bottom of the track, and back up they went. A nice soft corner at the top, where B class Team Parkland Motorsports kicks up some roost, and back down again. :D

Around the better half of the track, and then back out to the woods. Troy Holmes of Team Gilman Racing, one of the 5 teams from Gilman City, MO.

Yup, Mike was right, there were plenty of new, grass covered sections of the course. A rider from B class Team Broke Dick Racing heading down the 'green' trail.

the checkpoint. Where Team CDC Racing has the barcode on the side of their helmet scanned to record lap time and position. Lap times were averaging in the 10-15 minute range for the four mile course.

It wasn't long before teams were making pit stops for fuel, bike checks, and rider changes.

And back they went, to the woods with +30 class Kim Muzzavelli of Team Rose Between 2 Thorns...

And on the track with Pro class Michael Burrows of Team Outlaw Atv Customs.

Riders, like Johnny Kellison of Broke D**k Racing, experienced everything from a steep, wooded downhill into a muddy creek crossing....

To dry, dusty, highspeed field runs....

Here Henery Linley of Team Rose Between 2 Thorns and a rider from Team Parkland Motorsports make a third rider all but disappear.

From a soft, deep, loamy corner....

To a fast, sliding corner that reminded me of a TT race.

3 hours into the race, at the halfway point.... It was the only Pro class entry, Team Outlaw Atv Customs, with 17 laps completed, a 10:37 lap time, and a growing lead.

In second, with 16 laps, was Team Parkland Motorsports a B class team!

Another B class team with 16 laps, Team Broke Dick Racing, was just seconds behind!

In fourth overall, it was the first A class team, Team Gilman Racing.

The first Youth team was running 5th (and had been running 4th for a while), Team Shrum Racing had already put down 15 laps, with an 11:11 lap time.

The +30 class, Team Rose Btween 2 Thorns (aptly named for Kim and her two thorny teammates:D), was running strong in 6th overall.

In 7th, with 15 laps, was Team Phat Chops Cycle, the second A class team...... someone buy this man some goggles! :cool:

Holding down 8th was Team C.h.m. Racing, another A class team with 15 laps.

In 9th, all the way up from Arkansas, was Team Smackover Moto, riding B class with 15 laps.

And rounding out the top 10, also with 15 laps, was B class Team Z-.

With 3 more hours of racing still ahead of them, some teams, like Team Unique Powersports, took time to relax and chat....

Other teams, like Taylor and Johnny, from Team Burrows Machine and Team Broke Dick Racing, took time to eat something....

And others, like Ironman John Reed, took time to completely pass out! :devil:

As the racing continued, I only saw 2 bikes being pulled back in, and only heard of a couple quads having problems. One of them was Team Honda Racing, who threw a chain.....twice!

The 6 hour mark was finally in sight, as Tom brought out the white flag....

And bringing it around to finish off a full race in the lead...Team Outlaw Atv Customs, completing 36 laps in a time of 6 hours, 5 minutes and 45 seconds!

Running strong all day and finishing 2nd overall with 34 laps and first in B class, was Team Broke D**k Racing.

With a top 3 finish, and second in B class, it was Team Parkland Motorsports with 33 laps.

Taking 4th, also with 33 laps, was Team Gilman Racing.

[p@iNn3ck]

In 5th overall, and first in the +30 class, was Team Rose Between 2 Thorns, also with 33 laps.

Second in the A class and 6th overall with 32 laps, was Team C.H.M. Racing.

The impressive 2 man youth team, Team Shrum Racing, finished 7th with 32 laps.

In 8th place, with 31 laps, was Team Z-, also taking 3rd in B class.... and appearantly, still full of energy. :D

In 9th, the second +30 team, Team Unique Powersports, had 31 laps.... and were ready to load up the trailer and head back to Stl. :devil:

Finishing the top 10, also with 31 laps, was Team Mopar Hill Racing. They took 3rd in A class.

In 11th overall, and 3rd in +30, was Team Cdc Racing, with 31 laps.

In 12th place, and 4th in A class, was Team Phat Chops Cycle, another team with wheelie energy after 30 laps.

Lucky number 13, was Team Smackover Moto on their GasGas, finishing 30 laps, and taking 4th in B class.

Team Yack Yack finished 14th overall and 4th in +30 with 30 laps.

The first Ironman to finish (Ryan Smith), with a very impressive 29 laps, took 15th overall.

In 16th, with 28 laps, was Team Mossboys Racing, also taking 5th in B class.

The second 2 'person' Youth team, Bradley Burrows and Taylor Chance of Team Burrows Machine, finished a rock solid 27 laps, for 17th overall!

In 18th, was the second Ironman, Tim Miller, completing 25 steady laps (I think he had cruise control!):D

Also doing 25 laps, and taking 19th, was B class Team Honda Racing.

And making sure that ALL 20 teams that started the race finished the race..... the final Ironman rider, John Reed, completes 15 laps.

Great job on the race report. I know you were worried about the names and stuff but you did awesome. Thanks so much. Hope we see ya at some more Hare scrambles this year. There's a MHSC race the fourth of June at Warsaw, MO which will be a really good time. Thanks again.

Johnny, congrats to you and your team on 2nd overall. I was on the team with Ryberg and Snead that chased you guys all day but couldn't pull it off. Good luck at Warsaw.
