One of my long time friends told me to try running 18" tires in the rear, for dirt and trail riding. Could someone please give me the ups and downs to making this specific mod? I ride a 2004 400ex that has a LRD Full Exhaust, Dyno Jet Kit, K&N Air Filter, and a Performance CDI.

a huge loss of ground clearance would be the biggest, also lower top end speed, but it would handle a little better in the flat

That's pretty much it, loss of top speed, gain in acceleration. Slides good and lowers center of gravity, lose atleast an inch in ground clearence. If you ride in mud or rocks where you bottum out with 20's, you will be pushing a lot or buying skid plates with 18's. I love them racing and riding if I know I am not going to be in real bad conditions, but I like 20's for most trails.

18's are great for hill climbing. But you are way more likely to bend a rotor or sprocket. As long as the ground you ride on isnt rocky or rutted they wouldnt be that bad.

your friend is a long time idiot for telling you that.....:ermm:

Imagine a low rider car going down a street full of speed bumps, about the same as 18 inch tires on trails.....:scary: same difference.

I'd carry a spare skidplate with you at all times :blah:

yea i made the big mistake of going trail ridin last week..I thought I needed a break from the track. The only break I got was when a rock broke/bent the hell outta my rotor..dont ride rocky trails w/18's
