I was thinking about boring out my 400ex this winter, and I was wondering what the differece in power was between the 416 and the 440? I just wanna buy one of those $250 kits; if I do... will I need to buy anything else for it? I also read about instead of boring it out, getting a cam and porting and high-compression piston and all of that...how much would that cost, and what kind of difference is there in power? :macho

The more you bore it out, the torquier it will get. The 416 is a much revvier engine, and is capable of beating a 440 in a drag race. For hill climbing, the 440 is the only way to go. I havent ridden either, so this is just what I have heard. I also heard the 400ex is painfully underpowered, but we know it really isnt that bad, so I'm sure those are just exaggerations of the truth. A stock bore will still be revvier.

I haven't ridden a 416 or 440 either but going on what I heard, I'd choose the 416 kit. The 440 might be better in the dunes or something but I have also heard that you lose the quick-reving of the 400. That's one of the reasons I like the 400ex so much better than the raptor. It revs so quick.

416, 440 .. whatever, your not going to notice it reving any less ,
everyone says that because the pistons larger and theres more mass to move. If you look at a stock piston and a 440 theres a differance in size but not a whole lot.

Its more the cam than the actual 35cc bore thats gonna slow your rev.

a 440 will probably pick you up an additional 2-4 hp over a 416, the cam, piston, porting and carb is where most the power is coming from.

and then theres always 'lightening the flywheel' about 70 bucks and you'll be revving faster than stock.

The 440 will run a little warm.. than a 416, and thats going to take its toll on the engine in the long run.

I'm just talking from my personal experiance going from stock to 440. Could be revving alot slower, maybe I don't notice because I'm to busy hanging on:eek:

About how much more stress would it put on my engine, and how much would it shorten my engine life?

I'd go with 440. And yes it will shorten the life of your quad. But if you go with sparks racing or FST 440 it will be more reliable. You'd also want to get stronger clutch, valve springs, cam, hard faced rocker arms, connection rod, cam chain & drive train.

I think sparks racing has the most reliable 440 kit. but they cost more.

How much does it cost? Is there a website to go to where I could check it out?

Be prepared to spend quite a bit of money to build up a four-stroke performance engine. We just did a 300 motor and we easily spent over 600 dollars and it was not real radical like jumping up 40 cc. I've only looked at prices at Powroll.com and decide to put together our own engine with parts from White Bros. Wiseco, and Honda. When you start looking at things like labor, you had better start saving your money now.
