View Full Version : Round Three - Airport in Hickory, NC

Bonnie Cook

Round Three of the Mid East Series was held at the old GNCC race track in Hickory, NC - Airport Hare Scramble. The track is old, but a favorite to many. Some GNCC riders showed up to give a hand at the Mid East Series. I want to thank ALL the riders that were there - This race was the first time Quad riders out-numbered the Motorcycle riders and I hope that keeps happening!!!
The day was HOT, you would never believe about three inches of rain fell Thursday night!
SO, let's get started!

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:01 PM
One GNCC Pro rider that made the appearance was Johnny Gallagher. After being on an impressive role finishing in the top five at the last two GNCC events, Gallagher felt he would be able to finish well at today's race.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:02 PM
Another GNCC Pro here at the Mid East race was Greg Trew. Trew made the long trip from Florida, but many Mid East riders and fans were thrilled to get to look at the machines in their home town track.

Number 11 at the Nationals holds the Number One Plate in the 2005 Mid East Season - MIKE HOUSTON. Houston has not been able to take an Overall at Round One or Two, but has hopes of taking an Overall today, even though the competition looks fierce.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:04 PM
Current Point's leader coming into Round Three is Santo DeRisi, who holds the Number Two plate in the Mid East for 2005. DeRisi has been sweeping the competition in Rounds One and Two, and looks on the day's race with good spirits.
DeRisi is by far a crowd favorite - always being stopped by racers, fans, and friends to talk.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:05 PM
A young Mid East Pro rider, ready for the Overall is Josh Allen.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:06 PM
Number Three in the GNCC's is Chris Borich, and after racing in Ohio just the day before, brought out another one of his Alba Action Honda's for his hand of Mid East Racing.

Ten Seconds~

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:07 PM
In the middle of the Pro line sits Mike Houston - ready for the green flag.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:08 PM
Sean Neidlinger and Chris Borich await the green flag.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:09 PM
The Green flag goes up and who takes the holeshot???

Johnny Gallagher (why can't you do this in the GNCC's Johnny?)

Second is Gary Bryson on the inside with Mike Houston coming on strong. The rest of the pack had to battle the red clay powder dust that Hickory is notorious for!

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:10 PM
The last rider to get his machine fired up off the line is Santo DeRisi, but don't count him out of the battle.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:11 PM
After getting tangled up with another rider, Greg Trew gets turned around and has to start in the back of the pack. Trew can make come-backs, so his hopes weren't dashed.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:12 PM
In the A Class - Trevor Hyer pulled the holeshot with Eric Davis in second and Brian Toney in third.

All three of these riders are not Mid East regulars, but we still wished them the best of luck!

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:19 PM
The riders are out on the track ~

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:20 PM
Some parts were rooty!

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:21 PM
But what is a track without a MUD HOLE (or more okay!)

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:22 PM
Since Bryan Cook couldn't race - he was taking pictures out in the woods for me. Coming through the mud hole first on lap one was Mike Houston.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:23 PM
On lap two, Chris Borich took over the lead with Mike Houston just ten seconds back in second.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:25 PM
Johnny Gallagher was holding onto third, a minute behind Houston.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:26 PM
Santo DeRisi was holding off Sean Neidlinger for fourth.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:26 PM
Greg Trew was in sixth just fifteen seconds back.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:27 PM
Josh Allen was holding onto top ten.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:29 PM
In the A Class on lap two, Eric Davis was out front by forty seconds over Cory Salmon.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 03:30 PM
Joey Coogler holds onto third in the A Class.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:10 PM
In the 4 stroke B Class, Kirk Eger Jr held the lead.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:11 PM
As I headed out on the track to catch more pro racing - I ran into another racer - a snake!

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:13 PM
News spread that Santo DeRisi was out of the race. He lost his seat on lap two after holding onto fifth just a few paces earlier.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:14 PM
Towards the end of lap two - Mike Houston was a minute behind Borich.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:16 PM
Johnny Gallagher still held onto third.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:20 PM
On lap three, coming through the mud first was Chris Borich.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:21 PM
A minute behind in second was Mike Houston.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:21 PM
Chris Borich - hauling!

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:22 PM
Mike Houston holding onto second.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:23 PM
A minute and twenty seconds back was Gallagher still in third.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:23 PM
Just thirty seconds back in fourth was Greg Trew coming back after a last place start.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:24 PM
Sean Neidlinger was holding onto fifth, just ten seconds off the pace from Trew.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:24 PM
Jason LaRusso was thirty-five seconds behind Neidlinger.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:26 PM
Coming into the check point was Chris Borich still holding onto first.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:26 PM
Now a minute and twenty seconds back was Mike Houston.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:27 PM
At the six mile marker Chris Borich pops out of the woods heading for the scoring tent where he will get the white flag.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:28 PM
Houston still just over a minute behind the pace, but not letting Borich run away with the lead.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:29 PM
Nearly two minutes back was Johnny Gallagher holding onto third.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:30 PM
The battle for fourth was tightening up. Greg Trew was trying to hold off Sean Neidlinger.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:31 PM
Of course, the race report would not be complete without GUMP. He had to make the decision to run the Suzuki after a mishap with the HONDA. If he would have bought a Yamaha, that never would have happened -- right GUMP!!!???

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:32 PM
Eddy Siegers here is holding onto the lead in the Vet Class.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:33 PM
Rival Jason Walker is holding onto third place in the Vet Class.
These boys are best of friends off the track - but when the green flag goes up - it is race time!!

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:35 PM
With just a few miles till the finish line - Chris Borich races his way to the Overall.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:36 PM
Nearing a minute and twenty-five seconds, Mike Houston held onto second place heading toward the checkered flag.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:37 PM
Coming by for third was Gallagher and Trew - wheel to wheel, but would Trew be able to pass Gallagher?

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:38 PM
After taking the checkered flag - here Chris Borich and Mike Houston swap stories from the race, waiting on the third place finisher.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:39 PM
With just a minute separating Borich and Houston - time ticked by slowly waiting for third.
After just over two minutes of waiting, Johnny Gallagher came in all by himself.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:40 PM
With a last ditch effort to get by Trew available, Sean Neidlinger took the pass and moved into fourth overall at the checkered flag with Trew hot on his trail. Neidlinger was twenty seconds behind Gallagher.

Bonnie Cook
05-23-2005, 09:42 PM
So, with the race done and over - what to do now???
Come join us for Round Four in Shelby, NC at the Uncle Lem's track.

Thanks again for all the quad riders that came out for Round Three.
Thanks to all the new riders, many of which were familiar racers from the GNCC Series (Stack - yes, I am talking to you!). Hope you all can make it out to some more Mid East events this year!

Eddie help me figure out how to crank this thing in gear !!!!!
i'm getting used to it, sunday is the 1st real ride i had on it, and boy this thing rips... beating my knees to death on the tank though and the seat is really hard, other than that i can see myself getting faster on it with alittle time...

yamadog
06-01-2005, 02:51 PM
The easiest way to crank that Honda is to sale it, let someone else jump around like a monkey on the start, and get a Yamaha and push the button.
Eddie, I was right behind you the first two laps and half at the last race (J. Bagwell), I was grabbing (searched) for my camel pack and yanked on my twist in a tighter section, going into the third lap, smacked an oak in 2 or 3 gear, bent a tie rod, out of the race instantly. I watched you disappear, cursing like a sailor. Me and you got lucky and got out of a large bottle neck earlier in the race, and was able to put some distance on the group. Everyone was stuck and you did some crazy line, and I followed, it worked though, even thouch we both ran over some guys back fenders. Yes, he was cursing both of us, glad he did not have a gun.

I'll be ready at Uncle Lems. We (entire class) can't let you walk away in the Vet class, even though you are doing a very good job at it as of now.

Jake, cheating, that is unhearad of from anyone that knows him, or has ever ridden with him (he could never possibly do such a thing). lol.
I think he likes to think of it as......... just riding outside the trail in certain, specific, marked locations. Besides guys, he makes trails for everyone else as the race goes on, you just thought it was the pro riders getting impatient.

Jakes famous one liner, quote "it is only cheating when they catch you monkey ***"

Jake, I am going to sign you up for a typing class 101. We don't need everyone cracking on your hillbilly mubo jumbo. You have got the best computer money can buy (customized $4000 hardrive alone. I have never seen anything like it, it has its own light show, looks like a Pink Floyd concert, will even light you a cigarette), utilize your spell check.

Good luck to everyone at Uncle Lems.

Has it been raining all week near the track?????????

They both went to the no.6 spot.(good listeners)! JJ has to be baffled with brillance or befuddled with BS. :eek2: I have never went thru the woods with a saw cutting half way thru trees leaving em standing.......................................... ...

This weekend will be in favor of Johnny G --- It has been raining hard all week. Today is outcast with the sun trying to shine through, but no luck. The thing about Uncle Lem's is that if it rains half an inch and is sunny for a week, it will be muddy --- So, the track is going to be muddy this weekend boys, but nothing like the Nationals. Atleast the weather forecast for Sunday is Partly Cloudy, highs in the mid 80's, and 20% chance of rain.

Still coming?
