I'm certianly not a 400ex expert.. but I don't beleive a 440 is a stroker. I think the strokers are up in the 500cc range.

Strokers generaly have more torque but rev slower because of the longer stroke. (more intertia to overcome).

But yes, I'd definatly say a "fully" modded 440ex will give a 450r or a yzf450 a run for its money if they are just the usual pipe/filter/jet combos.

Equally modded machines there'd be no contest (assuming you have identical rider ability of course).

Correct me if I'm wrong of course. (I know a lot more about 300's ;))

You can do a 440 either with a larger piston or I am pretty sure one company does make a 440 stroker kit. It is just your preference. I you are trying to choose 440 or 450r, I would just sell the 400 and get the 450, because a 440 kit isn't extremely igh, but if you want to do it right the rest of the stuff will run into some money; head work, carb , etc.

a 416 bore with a 4mm stroke will give a 440.

the strokers seem to be best at torque. for dragging, i think i would go with a high compression and larger bore.
