I have a 2002 Raptor I'm thinking about buying with supposely low hours on it. I noticed that it has a slight gray smoke coming out of the exhaust when I rev it up.....is this normal.....it's not bad but it is noticable. The bike runs great but I was just wondering if this was normal for a raptor.....or if I was looking at a topend job soon.

Geez man, don't be a tool. If he knew do you really think he'd be asking. You once were inexperienced just like he is. Help people with your knowledge don't be an a#$.

It depends. It could just be running rich. White smoke is bad and blue smoke is bad. White is usually anti-freeze/water, and blue smoke is oil in your cylinder. Grey/black could simply be a rich condition.

Still have the Raptor, I was thinking it might be running rich too, maybe a clogged air filter or something. I don't think it was taken care of too well...I'll take a real good look at it before I decide to buy it or not.

I've been on 250r's forever and didn't know how these new fourstrokes were supposed to burn....it seems like there's practically no rings on the YFZ, wasn't sure what knd of ring setup these Raptors have....

Personally I'd never hop off an R onto a raptor, but that is just my opinion. I think you would be alot more happy on say a Z400 or one of the newer race thumpers. Raptors can handle well, but not without alot of suspension and geometry adjustments.

the way i figure it, no matter what color smoke it is, i would use it as an excuse to "rebuild" the motor and just happen to put in a high comp piston... :D flynbryan is right in the diagnosis of smoke colors. does it have any work done to it? do the screws on the carb look like they have been messed with? is there a ton of crap in the exhaust canister?

Seriously I have beat all raptors when were all stock. Do you have different results? I know they are fast on topend but I can pull away from the start so it would take a long time to catch.

stock to stock, i feel that the current 450's will pull away in second gear for sure. and from experience, that is true. what i wish is that yamaha would go ahead and throw in a higher comp piston in the 660, and a wilder cam, just like in the 450's. now that would be a fun bike! so yes, 450's given equal experience riders, etc, will beat the raptor in short races. which i would hope since the gearing on the 450's seems to be race derived, while the raptor is less suited to moto, etc in my opinion (and i have a raptor) i may be wrong though ;)

What do you have done to your raptor? I heard if you put a pipe on them it gives you about an extra 10hp but they are really loud.

its a 686 with 12:1 comp fully ported, jinson basket gytr clutches, white bros e series pipe, +2 a arms, +4 axle, +4 swingarm, and works shocks. theres a bunch of other crap but i havent finished it yet, right now it isnt even an rolling chassis!

So how does it run against the 450's with all that done! I like the blue frame that thing should rock when you get it all done. Summer is almost here so when are you going to have it done?

all raptors need is to breathe... i put the LRD pro4 kit on (full pipe 176 main jet and k@n filter with no air box lid) and it added 14 hp i was pleased great sound to not to loud but not to quiet

thanks! i cant wait to get it done, im hoping a little over 2 more weeks and i will have it finished if all goes well! i have never ridden it actually, and i havent found one around here modded quite like it. i have ridden an piped raptor before and it was fast, so i cannot even imagine what this one is going to do!

the lrd system is the best for a raptor, i think....the power up kit adss like 16 hp on bottom end
