View Full Version : Good motor for kart project?

I've been toying around with the idea of building a basic kart chassis, then building up a little motorcycle engine and install it in the chassis. What would be a good motor to go with? I'd like something air-cooled, so I don't have to worry about mounting a radiator. Auto-clutch would be nice as well. Anyone have any ideas?

a briggs and straton engine will do the trick, but only one gear. which = slow starts or slow speeds.

or get a dirtbike that has been crashed, or old. you can pick up a old 125 for under 500$ I would think. then take the engine and put it on the kart. you have gears and clutch.. just fyi they mount the clutch on the steering wheel on go karts, not a foot petal or somthin.

I was thinking something along the lines of an older 60cc or 80cc 2-stroke motor. I think it'd be a lot of fun to use.

what about a 1300cc turbo hayabusa?

go with 80cc liquid cooled. or a engien out of a yamaha blaster, it is a 200cc air cooled engine. I just sold a running and driving blaster for 500$. and got it for 200( wasent runing).

:D lol

How big should I make this thing? Average go-kart size, or something more the size of a Honda Pilot or Odyssey?

I say make it regular size since your only going with an 80cc motor. If you use a bigger motor, say that beartracker motor, and if you can get some suspension in it then I say go with something moer like the odysey.

buy a crappy blaster and use the suspension, a arms, and tires off of it. Make a sort of custom framed adult sized go kart with a snowmobile engine

I know I have 2 of them, both sittin on a shelf in our shop because we run 4-strokes...

If you want a serious motor(go-kart motor that is) you can buy a "10hp" Tecumseh motor for it Lots of torque and pretty reliable when not built up too much, and with the right gearing you can get up to about 70mph an still have decent acceleration....or..... you can buy a motor like a 125 shifter and have to put tires on it every time you drive it...but that doesnt sound like what your looking for...

I like the idea of an 80 motor out of a cr80 or something...wouldnt be auto clutch but would be a hell of alot of fun :macho
