I race mx with my 450r and i was wondering if there is anything i can do to make the first gear not so high? I have heard that a 13t sprocket will work, is this true?

You need first gear in mx? I think the stock gearing with 18's is perfect.

yes this is true. how often are you actually in first gear? with the 13 you should never be in first gear. start in 2nd gear.

I have never been in first gear while racing, heck i never have used firrst gear on my 400ex i dont think ever
If im in a very technical section i will just pull the clutch in and feather it out of the turn.

if you think thats long. you should ride my mx450r, 18s with 15 front sprocket and 37 rear

I would change your tires to 18"!
i just put in the stage 2 hot cam and an fcr carb, and a sparks full system on. i still have the stock gearing. that fixed the tall first gear. i am really impressed with the power now. i run 20 in razor2 tires and i can pull out in 2 nd gear.

i run xc but i still run the 13 with a built motor, its more preference but the 18's will gear u down as well

The 13 tooth sprocket worked well for me. I like it a whole lot better.

I dont see what the fuss is over the 450r first gear.
I noticed it was a bit tall the first time I rode it, but
was very comfortable with it after a only riding it
a very short time. If anything, I would rather have
another gear (6th) !!

I think Honda went with tall gears to make up for the lack of a 6th gear.
To you guys that "never" use 1st gear.......
do you burn up your clutches often?
