10W40 will be fine in the engine. I run Golden Spectro 80W in my trans. It is like 10w30. The bottle says 2 stroke oil on it. that is because 2 strokes only have oil in the trans.

I use Honda tranny oil in red bottle in tranny. Bottle says 2-strokes. Good for 4-strokes too.

Read your owners manual. It says use 10w40 in the engine and the trans. Honda knows more than we do, so do what they say.

I do, mobil 1 red cap used to be the oil of choice, but now they have the new extended life stuff, and i thought i read somewhere it contains friction modifiers, witch you do not want in the clutch side, but are ok in the motor side. I would think they would have to have plenty of fm's to go 15 thou between changes. Also shell rotella T full syn is a good oil for the motor, and stupid cheap, like 13.89 for a gallon of the stuff. There are a few other choice oils at wallyworld but i don't know mutch about them so i wont mention them here.

from the reading i do, both the synthetic and regular shell rotella oils are great. i will be running the synthetic in the engine and the regular in the clutch side. both can be purchased at walmart for cheap prices.

Pro-Honda HP Trans Oil SAE 80W/85W - Where the Trans and Engine oil is separate on this, you can use the oil designed to run in the CR 2 stroke bikes: Here is a brief description of how it works: High-performance racing transmission oil specially formulated for all Honda CR models. Transmission gears can whip conventional oil into a froth, and intense pressure at their teeth can lead to metal-to-metal contact. HP Trans Oil offers ultra-high film strength and shear stability to minimize transmission wear, while its high thermal stability prevents foaming and premature oil breakdown. Special anti-friction additives allow smoother shifting, while minimizing drag and power loss. Anti-shear additives increase clutch life, reducing clutch slippage.

I'm running the Rotella T synthetic in the engine now with the Red bottle honda tranny oil on the tranny side. That Rotella is pretty thin compare to Mobil 1 15-50. Makes me a little nervous, I actually think I might switch to the gold cap on the next change.

Honda's best oil recommendation with their oil is the hp trans oil on the clutch side (right side) and the silver bottle hp4 10w40 with moly oil on the motor side (left side).

To answer your original question, yes, you can use the HP4 10w-40 in both the engine and tranny, and this is acceptable per honda.

That is what had to do (when I went to change tranny oil, and found I picked the wrong one, but two quarts of motor oil).

But then I found out you can use HP4 motor oil for the tranny. SO I did because it was the night before I was to go out riding.

No problems. I live in AZ where is gets extremely hot. It is after all, a recommended alternative by honda themselves.

You'll be fine!

EDIT:

BTW, consider the 400ex, where the engine and tranny share the same oil..what oil are you to use? HP4 10w-40.

It just this time Honda created the 450R that has the tranny and engine separate, but this is to help aid in performance (to keep the tranny oil cooler, and since it is no longer shared with the engine, does not break down as fast). But the function of the oil remains the same, whether separate or not. Yes, you can get higher grade performance oil for your tranny, and it will help, but not a requirement.
