Is the HRC a drop-in, with stock rockers and valvesprings? I figure stock rockers, because it's not a hardweld, but I'm not sure about the valvesprings. Are stiffer springs required or recommened?

My understanding is that it is a direct drop in just like the hrc for the 450r.

Drop it in with stock rockers and springs and then go drop the hammer....

It's truly a drop in cam and it kicks some serious butt....:macho

I'm surprised. It's not super-aggressive, but it's pretty radical for the stock springs. I'll have to think about that one. Even though it's expensive, it's much cheaper by itself than a complete package of camshaft, springs, and rockers.

I'd put stiffer springs in it.

I know the 300ex has really wimpy stock springs.. and you'll get valve bounce if you put in an agressive cam and don't put in heavier springs.

I assume the 400ex is probably the same way since the engines are pretty much the same generation (1990's).

Nope. With the HRC cam, you should NOT put stiffer valve springs in it. It's a drop-in cam, simple as that. Adding stiffer springs will only lead to premature cam and rocker wear.

make sure you don't get the XR400 cam or the HRC copy cam. these are both different from the HRC cam. the HRC is far superior to these, however they all will work in a 400ex. if the price isn't near $300, you probably are looking at the wrong cam.

yeah, that is crazy. i can believe it though. the TC cam that i run sells for $350 without a core. with a core he drops off $150 though. i could probably buy 10 stock cams for that price so didn't have any problem giving him mine. :eek2:

If you have to ask that question, you should not be doing it yourself.

As a general rule, ANY time you make any modifications to the combustion process, whether it is pipe, filter, cam, piston, or even your air box lid, you should re-jet.

ok what i meant to say was do you have a recommendation for what changes to make???I know I need to change the jetting but thanks for making me feel like captain dumbass anyway

alright captain dumbass (j/k :D ), try this out:

i would go up on the mainjet to a 160 or so for starters. this is with that cam and no air box lid. it wouldn't hurt going with a 42 pilot jet either. i would probably run the needle clip in the 4th position from the top too. however, the elevation your at really plays a role.

the previous years needle was B44A. i would look up on a keihin site what the numbers mean. you might just be able to leave the stock needle in.
