I'm looking to purchase a quad for my 12 yr old. I'm leaning towards the Polaris Phoenix... What are your thoughts on this vs the Honda/Suzuki 250's?

the 250ex is a good learner quad and would be perfect for a 12 year old the z250 offers a zippier ride and better shocks but isnt worth the extra money and i just dont like the pheonix but thats just my opinion.

I wouldn't get anything Polaris.

also, the Z250 has an exposed drive shaft. if you get one good stick in that thing you are toast. i would say go with the 250EX

Amen. I have 2 polaris's in my garage and they require much more attention than my 2 honda's. The 250ex is a great little quad. I just bought one for my 10 yr. old and it's a bit big for him but he's done very well on it so far.

check out the Kymco mongoose 250. you will not be disapointed! it was reliable enuff to race the 12 hours of america trouble free.
its a 250cc liquid cooled four stroke, fully automatic

I say go with the 250ex, polaris's are junk, and I would avoid an offbrand like kymco. Plus it would be good to teach him how to shift gears so that when he gets old enough for a bigger machine, it wont be hard for him to learn, all he would have to do is learn how to work the clutch.

Agree with 250ex or the kymco.

I have yet to hear anything but good about the kymco's. They are slowly earning a good reputation.

i got my 250ex when i was 12 and i still find it fun to ride... but by the time i was 15 i found it to lack power and wanted something bigger and faster...

ive ridden a z250 and its barly that much faster then the ex, plus the honda shifts and rides smoother too.

300ex maybe, but the clutch may be harder to learn for a first quad then the semiauto on the 250ex

I'd check out the Blaster and the kid can learn how to use clutch too..always good to learn. And when he gets old and wants more power etc.. theres many parts for it out there in the market. ;)

and what experience do you have with a kymco? i and the team i was on raced one for 12 hours straight with not one problem. gncc'er also raced one in the sport class at the SC gncc with out a single problem, and took 3rd place with a last place start (only becasue they have to be started in neutral) they also come stock with a full set of kenda klaw tires

In a drag race the 250ex is faster, and out of the box, the z250's shocks are set up horribly. And I agree, I just don't like the pheonix, and it's top speed is only like 40 mph.

put him on a 300ex its a great learners bike, def. not to fast but when he gets ready it really wakes up with just a few mods
