A guy wants to sell me a set of Works Shocks that came off of a 250r and I have a 400ex, I know the shocks are shorter than the 400ex shocks, so will these work or will I need to modify something? Lower the rearend to level out the quad?

There is no difference in length of those shocks.

So what bike do you think they could possibly be for, he says they are 1/2 inch shorter than the stock shocks.

as far as i know, the 400ex, z400, and the 250r all have the same length of shocks. if they are 1/2" shorter, im not sure what they are off of.

The 250R shocks are shorter then the 400EX and Z400 by 1/2 inch.

Yeah I got the shocks from the guy today and sure enough they are a 1/2 inch shorter than the stockers. Do I need to lower my rearend to compensate, or will it be alright the way it sits?

The problem with the shocks bieng shorter is that now you're probally going to bottom the frame out before you bottom out the shock. The shocks are shorter but the shaft travel is the same ( without seeing the shocks I can only assume this ). Because of where the shock mounts to the arm, a 1/2 inch difference at the shock will be considerably more at the wheel.

The stock 250r shocks are shorter but on the works they are 16 1/4 eyelet to eyelet.

I have ran 250R works shocks on my 400 for 3 years works great. I had to give them more preload 400 is heavier.
