I was thinkin about gettin a 450r and I wonder how does the tranny hold up to shifting w/out the clutch? I know dirtbike riders do it all the time.

i only use the clutch to take off and when i have to go slow in the woods. Upshift and Downshift without a problem

With this topic you will always see about a 50/50 response as to whether you should do it or not. I have changed gears a few times without the clutch just to see what the big deal was. It was smooth and didn't feel like it was doing any bad, but I'm thick headed and will remain using the clutch.:D I put to damn much money into this thing to have something come back and kick me in the ***.

i only shift without the clutch when i really need to hold on tight...or get arm pump and cant pull it in.

sometimes I'll shift up without it if arm pump is too bad to pull the clutch, but always downshift with the clutch.

i went most of last season racing MX without using the clutch at high rpm's and this is what happens...you can't do that, as much as it seems to be ok, you have no idea what is going on in your power transfer to the tranny. i'm not 100% sure yet if this is the cause but my engine builder said he was pretty sure i broke the clutch basket and the plates are very worn, slipping bad too. it locked up at the last race so bad it wouldn't even kick over, we all thought it was the crank bearing. i reccommend shifting with the clutch if you don't have time or money to waste.

I used to shift w/o using the clutch at times when just riding up a hill or when im carrying something up the driveway but I'll use it now if thats the ramifications of just not using the clutch.

I have never once shifted with out the clutch and I never will. WTF?
Do you guys ever shift your car into park while driving down the hi-way? Same thing.

I was told by a local pro rider that he only uses the clutch on down shifts not up shifting unless he needs to rev it on the up shifting. I try to use it all the time but every now and then I dont

I've shifted my car with out the clutch too. The RPM's have to be just right or it wont shift and it's hard on they synchro's. With a 4-wheeler weather the RPM's are right or not its gonna shift.
If you want to compare it to shifting a manual car with out the clutch I would say go down the road at 55 in 5th gear and just jam it into first with out the clutch.

O.K. now where is the clutch again?

when i raced mx with my 250R, i never used the clutch............for mx racing, using the clutch seemed to really slow me down.

i have not tried to shift my 450 without the clutch........i intend to stay away from doing that.
