Round 3 of the Youth GNCC series rolled into Sunday Creek MX Park located in Millfield,Ohio for another round of Youth GNCC action.

Friday afternoon had many young riders getting prepared in the late spring sun for what everyone hoped would be another great race! Mother nature did not disappoint and for another year the Penton would we a very muddy event! Many of the racers got to witness what would be awesome racing conditions turned into a swamp!

With the start time set at 8 a.m. , parents and racers began the early preperations for a soggy race. Glouster Ohio resident Kyle Hellyer sits in the rain as Racer Productions makes last minture preperations to the course. After a 3rd place finish at the muddy Steele Creek race, Kyle had shown he could race in the mud!

Tyler Swain made the race all the way from Duncannon Pa. Here Tyler and his Father await the instructions during the riders meeting.

69 entries for this race was incredible! The youth riders are flocking to the GNCC's and it is an awesome sight to see!

Pappy

90cc Production was first to get fired up and off on this 2 miles course. Almost every racers I spoke with said this was another great layout!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 04:12 PM
Joshua Merritt was going to grab the holeshot with Walker Fowler moving up fast on the outside. Some of these 2 stroke mini's have been worked over pretty good and thier speeds are enough to have anyone on thier toe's at the start!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 04:15 PM
Joshua Merritt, Dylan Kell and Walker Fowler get close in the first turn. For those that miss the early morning action because these are kid's racing, you are missing some of the hottest action of the entire weekend!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 04:20 PM
Micheal Keleman and Cody Hill both had bad starts. Cody had informed me he was going to hang with Keleman off the start and follow this talented rider and had expectations of getting upfront early this race. Unfortunatley Keleman missed the throttle off the line and was late getting up to speed. Cody laid back following his own advice and they both started at the end of the pack in first turn.

Pappy
05-16-2005, 04:22 PM
As the riders hit turn 2, Joshua Merritt was still the leader with Fowler on his grabbar. The 19 rider field was off and running at the Penton!

90cc Limited 11-15

Joshuah Dains and Nathan Rothermel battle for the holeshot heading into turn 1. Dains would hold the lead and get the holeshot!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 04:28 PM
This class came thru turn 1 in two different packs of hungry racers looking to gain an advantage over the other as they ripped thru the slick grass field section!

Pappy

90cc Limited 8-10

Matthew Close had his Kasea on fire heading for the first turn.

Pappy
05-16-2005, 04:32 PM
Cutting the corner short got Close out of the chewed up turf and he pulled hard grabbing ground on the rest of the class. Smart racing at this age is not uncommon anymore, and in this series its becoming clear these young riders have the head for this sport!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 04:33 PM
Kyle Hellyer followed suit and this class was off to the woods!

70cc Production

Kyle Riley was told by the GNCC officials if he wanted to race he would be forced to run the 70 class aboard his Cobra 70. While this may or may not be the best choice, Kyle was eager to get his quad out front and up in the hunt for an overall.

Kyle quickly grabbed the holeshot of the 70 class, follwed by #838 Micheal Mussi. Mussi was really pumped up about this race and wanted nothing more to take home a win!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 04:38 PM
Riley was the first out of turn 1 and headed after the other classes.

Pappy
05-16-2005, 04:52 PM
By the time I was able to get to the scoring area, I caught up with the 70 class. Kyle Riley was scored, then pulled off the course. He later explained that he had clipped a tree and once refired, he rode so hard catching Mussi that arm pump did him in.

Pappy
05-16-2005, 04:54 PM
Micheal Mussi rolled thru the first lap and hammered his quad up the slick hill. I had my fingers crossed that he could finally get a win in his class!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 04:58 PM
Fowler at the start of lap 2, prepares to get a goggle change. Walker had a 55 second lead over second place at this point in the race!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:00 PM
As the riders started coming in to be scored, each one showed the effects of 2 miles of mud!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:02 PM
Looking into this young mans eyes, one can see the concern. The hill directly after the scoring area was going to be a rough one!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:04 PM
The first 2 laps did not draw much attention, that was about too change!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:06 PM
The first indications alot of us at the scoring area had to the way the race was going, started at the end of the second lap. Riders began having difficulty navigating the downhill section just prior to the scoring area.

This rider slides into the tree and looks back up the track to see who was about to join him:(

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:08 PM
Keleman came rollin in and was off to work on the field ahead of him!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:11 PM
After Keleman came past me, I could have swore I saw Cody Hill a few spots back coming down the hill. When some time passed, I walked over to the oppisite side of the scoring area. The offcamber had become so slick, quads were piling up in the ditch along side the road:eek: Just after this picture, I spotted my son, standing beside his quad which was upside down:p

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:13 PM
GNCC crew members were doing everything they could to get those wrecked back on track, and to try and keep more quads from getting caught up in the mess!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:14 PM
As fast as they could, Jeff Russell and others re routed the course for a more safe approach to the scoring area.

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:15 PM
The hill after the start really started breaking down, and as groups of racers would clear the scoring tent, the fun began!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:17 PM
Soon, this section became so slick that almost every rider was getting some form of help to get up it or around stuck riders.

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:19 PM
Tyler Lenig dives in and helps Nate Rothermel get going!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:20 PM
It became apparent how slick this section was, we could only wonder what was going on out of our view!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:24 PM
One hillclimb in the back section became impassable for alot of the riders. This created a huge bottleneck with stuck quads everywhere.

The decision was made to have the large group of riders file inline and head bcak to the field section. Once this was done, an impromptu re start was staged with Officials doing thier best to keep the quads in order.

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:25 PM
Jeff Russell leads the way as they get the re start in a decent location.

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:26 PM
Once the quads were assembled, they were back at it for a 1 lap dash to the finish!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:28 PM
Not all was pretty after the re start. Another hillclimb brought many riders back to a stop awaiting help!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:29 PM
Jeff Russell had his work cut out for him as some sections required him to pull the quads up hills

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:31 PM
Tim Lenig gets in on the action as he helps this young racer up a hill.

I will speak for every parent there that we would like to express our deepest and sincere thank you to all that pitched in to help our kids! Its people like you that make this sport what it is!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:34 PM
Walker Fowler came out for his last lap and had a large enough lead to get fresh goggles and wash off his mud filled gloves.

Walker went on to win the race in a commanding fashion. On the last lap, Fowler just missed the huge bottleneck and re start. This was indeed lucky for him as his quad stopped running on him! Finally getting it fired, he completed the lap and took the win.

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:36 PM
Micheal Keleman overcame his bad start and worked his way expertly thru the field. Finishing second was quite an accomplishment in such conditions!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:37 PM
Making passes as shown here as Keleman moves past Bryden Shick is what it takes to get to the front!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:39 PM
Micheal Ferraro stayed out of trouble and finished 4th!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:40 PM
Travis Jumper worked his way upfront and finshed 6th!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:42 PM
Stephen McCulloch was your 7th place rider in 90cc Production!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:43 PM
Brycen Neal brought himself home the 8th place spot! Way to ride Brycen!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:47 PM
Cody Hill placed 9th and encountered his share of difficulties in the mud. His 2 biggest complaints were the mud and the bottleneck. The mud had built up so bad on his nerfs that he couldnt shift, and at the large bottleneck the officials held them up when he thought some new lines were available.

Better luck next time, and file away every aspect for future use young man!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:48 PM
Riley Boswell was able to get in 4 solid laps and placed in 12th

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:49 PM
Michael Spadling is another rider with loads of talent. He was your 13th place rider in 90 Production.

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:52 PM
Nathan Rothermel had his best finish at the Penton, bringing home 3rd in 90cc Limited 11-15.

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:53 PM
Brandon Boso proved that never giving up pays off. Even when suffering mechanical troubles, he did what he could and brought home 4th.

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:54 PM
Nathaniel Crambit rides his way to a 5th place finish. Way to go Nathaniel!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:56 PM

Pappy
05-16-2005, 05:57 PM

Hayden Wolpert rode hard and took the win in 70cc Production!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 06:03 PM
This win was Hayden's first class win!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 06:08 PM
Micheal Mussi took over the lead in 70cc Production at the start of lap 2. He began riding extremely well and it appeared he was going to capture his first win!

After scoring on lap 3, his quad shut off. After a few seconds, a fast thinking older brother found his kill switch to be disconnected. Back on track and still retaining the lead, Mussi's quad vapor locked leaving him stopped on the track.

Talking with Walker Fowler after the race gave me some further insight on just how fast Mussi is.

Walker said" I came up on Mussi and he pulled right over for me. After a little further down the track I kept hearing someone behind me and it was Mussi! He was hanging with me with no problem!"

Better luck next round Micheal, we all know you have the ability to get the job done!

Ryan was steady pounding his Yamaha in the 90cc limited 8-10 class and looked like a pro! Congrats on your win Ryan, you earned it!

Pappy
05-16-2005, 06:16 PM

Cody Hill after the race....

This one was really a tuff one. You had to be smart and try to keep out of trouble. I need better starts to hang with the leaders thats for sure. Lines opened up everywhere but none really seemed to pay off today.

Thanks for the great race coverage, and I hope everyone enjoyed the photos.

Providing the Race Coverage from the Youth GNCC Races is one of my biggest priorities and this weekend, I wasn’t sure I had any help with the coverage for the morning or youth races, so I had to decide whether to race myself in the Morning and risk not providing any coverage from the Youth or Morning races.

The decision was easy and I grabbed my camera and head into the woods for the coverage and left my race ready Suzuki in the trailer. I will admit that I felt half sick and depressed when Stock Class started without me on the line because I live and breathe ATV racing, but I also put my heart and soul into providing the coverage for everyone to enjoy that can’t make it to the races.

I don’t plan on missing anymore races this season because this may be my last complete season of racing because the site is growing so rapidly and takes so much of my time that I have to give up something, and I am not about to give up my family, day job, or atvriders.com, so racing is the only other thing on my list.

If you enjoyed the “Youth Race Coverage”, but wish you could see more photos, then be sure to check out the photo gallery.

Awesome!!! Thanks Harlen for the great pics. Chancers and I were just checking out the coverage. He said he wished he could have been there. He loves the mud.:D I know those kids really rode their hearts out. And those people who don't even have kids racing but they get out there and help and push are tremendous. We're starting to save for the last 2 rounds. Hope we can make it to St. Clairsville but if not we would never miss Ironman. Big thumbs up to all the youth riders.

Thanks for the great coverage and pictures! This was my sons first 4 wheeler race. I would like to thank every one that helped him out on the track. They all are going to be great racers as they get older!

Thanks again!

what about seth mumford.seth made his racing debu at steel creek in north carolina.he finished 4th in his class and 4th overall.south carolina wasn't kind to seth as the arrows were a little confusing and he took a wrong turn.after getting back on track,he still managed to pull out a 6thplace win in his class and 17th overall out of more than 50 bikes.we were hopeful going into the penton and seth worked hard to come out in the top three. watching him stand on the podium was unbelievable.CONGRATULATIONS seth on your 3rd place overall win!
