today i was riddin my brand new YFZ and i went to slide sideways to stop and it fliped upside down. i wasnt worried because i would roll my 400ex all the time worse than that and the handlebars didnt even bend. well, i fliped it back onto its wheels and the handlebars were about an inch from hitting the gas tank. the steering stem is also a little bent. i dont understand how it can bend so easy from just rolling upside down. has any1 else had this problem?

yeah the stock bars and stem are really weak. I went through 2 of them before I finally broke down and bought an aftermarket one.

sometimes a roll over may not seem as bad as one you have had before but there might be 10x as much damage, i guess its all about the physics of the roll over. i just bent my stock bars this weekend and put on some renthal cr high bends, i love em. and from all the other steering stems ive seen the yamaha's seem to use the lightest gage steel of them all.

i rolled my 400ex like just tipped and slid and bent my stem and it bent, then the next time i rolled it it carthweeled flipped sagged the bars downa dn what not and it didnt bend it just depends how they land, yfz is all really lightweight stuff so its weaker to start

Gotta give credit for Honda's reliability... i have never had a single problem with my 400 in 3 years of hard riding.

Better than buying strong bars and stem and bending your frame. Imagine the cost and labor of that.

well, i ahd the same problem u had, but with my 250r. i crashed and flipped it over. the bars stayed straight, but i rolled it back over and my stem was bent... well, i rode it and i crashed again, luckily that time i rolled it the oposite way, and it bent the steering stem back straight.... talk about luck hahahaha :macho

This is one of the times, I HAVE to dis YAMAHA, love the quad, but

the steering stem and handlebars they put on these babies are total junk, I am not surprised at all that you bent the poop out of them, I would be happy your okay and look into after market bars.

PS: Rolling your quad should not be a normal thing that you do, Be careful, I wouldn't want to hear that you got messsed in one of those, sadly it does happen, let's hope not to you:eek2:

Some people are jealous what other people ride. It's kind of like well since I own it its the best. If you are running hare scrambles the yfz is not the best!

didn't this start with bad handlebars, and a roll over????

I am sure you each have a very nice ride, and it obviously suits you individually, so who really cares....

Be happy to just ride!

GOOD LUCK OUT THERE!!!!:D

Any bike can be customized to race in most conditions. The YFZ not good for harescramblers??:eek2: :eek2: let Bill Balance know.

Ok you got me there!

05-17-2005, 09:53 AM
All I'm trying to say is that the 450R, the YFZ, and the Z can all be great bikes depending on mods and driver. Take a look at the GNC season this year, the YFZ is not fairing well. And it's one of the best out of the box. But when big money is involved and great drivers, everything changes. Think about this, what wins at the local tracks YFZ and the 450R, the Z almost never wins atleast at my track. Yet in the pros the Z is a definite top contender and last years champion. Why? because of the factory team support, and Gust and Jones.

So to say the YFZ is not good at this or that can sound dumb. Just the same for the 450R. Yamaha does not send me checks in the mail, so I wont defend there products. Hell I picked the YFZ because my freind owns a yamaha dealer. If he owned a Honda dealer I would have ended up with a 450R! They are both great bikes, I'd love to own both!! :eek2:

You are right and I totally agree with you!

This is how they made the quad weigh the same as the honda, use lighter parts, you need some aftermarket stuff if you want to race.

400exrider36
05-18-2005, 07:13 PM
yeah, and honda had to get rid of the electric starter and battery to make it weigh the same as the yamaha:p

400exrider36
06-06-2005, 04:30 PM
o yeah, one more thing. does anyone know if the stock stem bottom will fit with a houser stem? (or will i have to buy the houser stem bottom)

Bill Fuller
06-06-2005, 05:07 PM
It will fit.As for all the quad bashing I am getting sick of all this crap.Ride what you ride and I'll ride what I ride,If you think your Honda is to good to ride with this YFZ then I say see ya.It's funny they don't argue like this at YFZcentral when anyone mentions Honda.I say the only reason people are riding the Honda is contengency $$.I am sure the R is a great machine, but it didn't have what I want in a XC machine. It's not only the electric start I like the snappy hard hitting power, reminds me alot of my old Cannondale and the 250R.

I don't want to start a damn riot here,so back to the topic.I would also check Burgard for a YFZ stem,I have been running thier stem for about a year and love it.Price is great also. The advantage of using the Houser bottom is that it helps to reduce bump steer by changing the position of the tie rods. You can also adjust the stops for a better turning radius. All in all I love my YFZ,but I do agree with the fact that the steering stem design is total crap.I wish it was as easy to fix as the swingarm:ermm:

yeah look on ebay. hellbound racing has new burgard stems on there with either 7/8 or 1 1/8 bar clamps for 190 with free shipping!

so if i get the Burgard stem, im not gunna have to worry about bending it?

sampleez
06-08-2005, 04:54 PM
it will be a lot stronger than stock, but it'll still bend. a guy i know bent a roll design stem in a not too bad crash, so i guess they all will. the trick to not bending them is not wrecking :D

400exrider36
06-08-2005, 06:48 PM
yeah i suppose, i just dont want to have to replace it again if i do happen to roll it again....

Bill Fuller
06-09-2005, 04:46 AM
Would you rather replace a frame,or a arms??I know the stem is weak but there are reasons for this.I remember putting a brand new aftermarket stem on my Cannondale only to bend it less then 30 minutes into the first ride:mad:

sampleez
06-09-2005, 01:08 PM
that's a good point. i would really make sense to gusset the top stem mount on the frame so it wont bend or break. or just get a stock stem again. and if you want a stem that's a little taller, i've heard the raptor stem bolts right in and is about an inch taller.

yoshimurakfx400
06-09-2005, 07:55 PM
i say get somebodys stock stem
