View Full Version : A good oil

Alright, I would like to see this turn into a guide for the beginners on choosing a good oil. I myself get confused when reading some of these threads on good oils and how it affects the clutch, whether it has "moly" in it, and what not. I live in Bradford, PA, where our refinery produces Brad Penn. A lot of my family works there so we get it for free. I have been running semi-synthetic racing oil in all my quads and bikes and I havent noticed any problems with it. But a lot of poeple swear to using Mobile 1 "red cap". I dont really pay much attention to it so whats the different between the new stuff and the old stuff and how is it affecting whether the clutch is slipping or not? I would like to find out since I have heard lots of great things from people using Mobile 1.

I have heard that running a synthetic will make it run cooler, but you have to watch out for "moly". Is the Amsoil 0W-40 synthetic? Moly?

If the EX has any motor work you should definately run 15w50!!!!! Being that it's air cooled you need the added protection!! 10w40 is fine if motor is stock!! Anything Certified or compatible with a wet clutch is what you should run in synthetics!!! KLOTZ, MOTUL, AMSOIL, MAXIMA, BELRAY EXC......

I think you have to order Amsoil so I use Shell Rotella oil which works well.

What about your traditional Honda 10w-40 oil? Is it just crap or will it work ok too? What are the advantages of synthetic? Longer life right?

hmmm. so mobil 1 red cap 15w 50 is gonna be fine then? not sure if it is the new stuff i seen i think im gonna start buying it. what is the main thing to look for in it just moly or is there anything else that can screw up my clutch in it?

i guess any friction modifiers will mess with your clutch. but the way i understand is that moly or any of the other friction modifiers dont hurt your clutch, they just cause slippage which can be fixed by putting in some heavy duty clutch springs. so really with heavy duty springs you can run anything. would someone correct me if im wrong?

amsoil and mobil one definately rock. im not sure if putting any oil with the friction modifiers a good idea with or with not harder sprongs. when i put motul into my gsxr, i got a very bad clutch chatter, i took it out and it went away, but i still occasionally get it even now. i never got clutch chatter before, but after that i get it now. because of that, i am very careful with what oil i put in anything.

Amsoil is a really good oil, but I used Honda HP4 full synthetic for a really long time in my 400EX. Then I switched from it to Bel-Ray EXL, and the friggen head gasket started leaking. (Wtf?) It was even the same wieght!

If you haven't tried Klotz you really need to. If you have a two-stroke, you'll love the protection, performance, and smell. If you're using a four-stroke you will appreciate the protection it gives, plus it helps your engine run better.

I know a lot of you like Amsoil. Trust me: if you're having luck with Amsoil you will really enjoy the results of Klotz.

Which Klotz oil do you suggest?

I am running a stock bore 400EX with a 10.5 JE and Hotcam Stage II.

The GNCC racers all use the Klotz MX4 in their 4-stroke Quads. I would probably recommend either the 10W/40 or 15W/50 MX4. The 10W/40 works best in the largest variety of weather conditions and seems to be most popular for that reason.

I will talk to anyone about anything related to Klotz, but we make it a policy to NOT negative sell. I know the facts about other oil companies, but I would much rather say why you SHOULD use Klotz than why you shouldn't use someone else. I think it is a policy the whole industry should follow.

that is a good policy.... i wish every company did that... it gets annoying hearing people say that their's is better then another company's because the other company's product....
