I just got done replacing axle bearings in my 01 400ex and when I got done there was an o-ring left over. It is a big one that goes around the carrier. I think it goes behind the chain sprocket. Will it hurt anything to leave it off? To put it back on could I cheat and not remove the axle again? Thanks for your help.

if it is the large o ring, i belive it is a dust seal. it probably wont hurt anything but they put it there for a reason:p

It is a black o-ring about 3 inches in diameter. I am not sure exactly where it came from but I am pretty sure it was behind the sprocket hub. I know they dont put parts on for no reason but just from looking at it I cant see why I should remove the axle again to put it back on. Thanks for your help.

it goes around the bearing carrier to keep mud from getting between it and the bearing carrier

no problem man. when folks send me that brake stay for coating, 9 times out of 10 they forget to remove it:p when you posted its size i pretty much figured what it was. in all honesty i dont think it does much at all, but to be safe id yank a hub and pull the stay and install it.

I havent run that O ring for quite a while now. After reinstalling the axle and adjusting your chain, that thing has always ripped so I just omit it. Sometimes I just take the strip of rubber after it rips and wedge it in there. I havent experienced any premature bearing failure or anything by not running it....

that is an o ring in the brake stay and right next to it by the carrier. both are simiilar sizes. i noticed when i took my axle out last time, one of them was broke. not sure how it happend but i replaced it.
