could i install a high comp piston without the cam, then maybe do the cam later down the road? i'll be getting about 100 dollars for grades and was wondering if this might be a good upgrade. also, how much would it cost for the shop to install the piston. i could run pump gas with a 11.1 right? thanks

You sure could do that, but the greatest benefit would be to do both as they compliment each other. You can run pump with 11:1. As far as pricing for the install Im not so sure, but if you do the work your self a bore and hone will be around $40 and just a honing would be around $15. You will save a ton doing this yourself.

Thats what I did was a stock bore wiseco 11:1 w/ a hotcam stage 1. Really woke it up. Did everything including new valve seals, new piston, used cam, new gaskets, new clutch, new chain and sprockets and CRF 450 cam chain for right around $500. You could easily do the piston and cam for under $200 if you shop around.

Thats because your 450 has higher compression already. The EX only has like 9.2:1 or so stock, so a high compression piston in an ex could be a 10:1, even though your 450 is already higher than that. Also if anything the cam usually helps. It can keep the valves open longer or farther, thus keeping the motor slightly cooler, from what I've been told. The power now shouldn't have anything to do with octane.

Also you shouldn't have to rejet, as long as you run the correct octane.
