I want a raptor so badd!! I finally have my dad talked into it but now i can only find 2001 models in my price range. Would i be okay to buy an 01 or should i just save my money for a little while longer and get the 02 model. I dont want to spend sll of that money just to have it break down in a few months. Let me know what you guys tthink. thanks

let me tell you a story, about a month ago my neighbore was trying to sell his 400ex and someone offered to trade him a 2001 raptor straight up. He thought he was getting a killer deal so he did it and on his first ride that weekend the tranny went. Id save up a while longer for an '02

Derek, sounds like some Raptor owner knew his tranny was going so he unloaded the bike fast.

250Xtreame, wait and save your money to find a '02. Many problems areas were addressed and for the kind of money you're going to spend I'd hate to see you rebuilding a tranny on top of that.

yeah and my friend was gonna call and b!tch out the guy who sold it to him but like right before he was about to the guy who he traded with called and told him that something blew up (I forget, i think it was the piston or maybe something happened to the cam) and he was all pissed then my friend told him what happened to the raptor. It was kind of funny because nothing of mine broke :)

just wait a little while because the 03 are going to be coming out and when that happens the 02 price is going to drop 3,000$ or more.

You could always try to find a nice '01 with the 3 year extended warranty...that way you could save money and at least yamaha would have to take care of any defects. I'm sure that Yamaha is very aware of the '01's problems so any dealership should be sympathetic to any problems if the bike ever developed any.

just a thought.

P.S. I doubt that when the '03's come out that the 02's will drop $3000...but what do i know.:p

Yamaha has been poor at best at addressing these problems. The Yamaha corporation has just about denied all problems and says the problem exists with the rider (despite the fact that the gear ratios changed and they went from 3 dogs to 4 dogs on the gears). Seems that most all tranny repairs have been goodwill repairs with little support from Yamaha. Also, if you read the fine print in the Y.E.S. (Yamaha Extended Service) plan they say that if the vehicle has been modded whatsoever it voids the warranty. It also doesn't cover normal wear and tear items which the tranny is sort of in a gray area on that one. Even with an extended warranty they aren't likely to repair a blown tranny 2 years into ownership without calling it operator error.

I want a raptor so bad but they are way to expensive right now and I dont think I would buy a 2001 unless it was 3,000 or under, and pretty much right away I would update the tranny to the 2002 specs. Oh well I should have built credit up enough to buy a new 2002 or 2003 by Christmas. :devil

well with the differance in price between the 01 and 02 just think your gonna fill that differance by replacing parts int he 01 most likely and you might as well avoid the trouble altogether by getting a 02 used. 01's definetly have problems and i've heard a lot of bad stories about them.
