Right now in my book they are two completely different quads. The Z in stock form is a capable trail machine, it takes a few 1000 to make it a good jumper and mx'r, arms, shocks, swinger will bring it up to that level.
The 450R is purpose built for the most part great right out of the box, no reverse, kick start. you know you have read all the stuff we all have over the past year. Ride them both and see which one you like better.
I love my Z and only trail ride so I'm good.

You would have to spend quite a bit to get a z400 up to par with a 450r. The z400 is an excellent trail machine and a lot of fun to ride. The 450r is quick in stock form but put a pipe and the hrc kit on it and it is like a totally different animal. If you are going to be riding hard on a track and flying through hayfields the 450r is the machine. It might be to much for you since you are coming from a 300ex but that depends on your riding skill. They are a night and day difference if you can ride both but I love mine.
