View Full Version : 2005 GNCC "Loretta Lynn's" Round #6 Afternoon Coverage

As many of you already know from the "Live Coverage", the Loretta Lynn's Dude Ranch was flooded Friday Night when torrential rain dropped several inches of rain on the area, which caused the river to crest its banks and flood the surrounding area. Unfortunately, many vehicles, tents, and trailers were situated within the flood plane where the water rose up to several feet deep in sections and small islands formed which had many scrambling for the higher ground as the water continued to rise.

By Saturday morning, the best transportation through the parking area would have been a boat, but a 4x4 quad was a good alternative.

Many risked driving through the deep waters to get to higher and dry ground.

Even after waking up to a flood, this group of GNCC Racers remained in fine spirits as they dealt with the situation in stride.

Ben Wrightsman and his crew had the perfect pit area right on the track Friday, but today it would have been better for trout fishing.

The complete lower field section on the MX track side of the river was covered in water, so Racer Productions moved the entire track to the otherside of the road.

With all the ribbons and markers in place, it would have been awesome to have a jet ski in the trailer this weekend:D

With the track location changed, those that could, loaded up everything and headed out looking for a parking location closer to the track.

Many weren’t able to move there vehicles to higher ground, so they were forced to ride through the water with there ATVs to Tech Inspection and the track before the race.

The Pro Pits weren't immune to the flooding either, and they were moved once again to the other side of the road, which required them to carry everything over from their vehicles because there wasn't any room for parking and barely room for even a canopy/easy up as hundreds of riders were forced to pits side by side during the afternoon race.

With the race delayed one hour, many took some time to listen in on John Ayer's Church Service that is held at every round of the series on Saturday and Sunday morning before the race.

If you didn't want to get wet or muddy from going from location to location, this family had the right idea and setup for staying together and keeping dry.

The Starting location was moved down road over a mile away from everything, but it was one of the only remaining dry spots in the field that would hold several hundred racers for the start of the event.

The day before, the new start location was completely dry and served as the only locations the riders would cross over the road from one side of the property to another.

Take a careful look at this photo and the Banners to the Far Left in the grass field because by Saturday the grass field had disappeared as shown in the photo to follow.

Heading into Loretta's, #3 Chris Borich, once again held sole possession of points lead and the Overall and felt confident that he would be able to keep his Alba Action Honda out front of the 5 Time Champion, #1 Bill Ballance.

#2 Factory Suzuki Rider, William Yokley, was all smiles before the race Saturday because of the wet and muddy conditions. The last two muddy races in 2004 at John Penton and the Ironman Yokley was able to capture the Overall both times in the mud and after having several after having his worst race of the season this past race at Big Buck when he was left sitting with a clogged vent hose, but still managed to finish 9th Overall, Yokley is looking to follow it up with an impressive performance in the mud.

Finally, Brad Page, was back in action after skipping out on all the fun for the 1st five rounds of the season. Brad followed the complete series for years, but his family and busy schedule has prevented him from racing the entire season, but he still tries to hit the ones closer to home and give it his best shot against the best woods racers in the world.

Brad lead the Overall last year in the last lap at Loretta's before his body became fatigued from not racing week after week and had to settle for a 5th Overall, which was rather impressive if you ask me, but who am I?

Good Friends, #18 Johnny Gallagher and #10 Greg Trew have teamed up for the remainder of the season and are looking for things to start turning around.

Greg Trew has got a head start on Johnny after putting in an incredible comeback and finished 4th Overall after struggling through several DNFs at the beginning of the season.

Johnny Gallagher switched to the Honda this season after running the Z400 the past few years in hopes of getting back into the groove he had early with the Suzuki. Unfortunately, Johnny hasn’t been able to get everything to fall into place this season, but he has made some more changes in hope of working his way back into the top 20 Overall.

Todd Knippenberg has been having a fairly consistent season finishing in the top 20 Overall every race this season except the opening round at Texas, but unlike last year, he hasn’t been able to crest the top 10 overall yet this season.

With the playing of the National Anthem, we were within minutes of the start of a grueling three lap race that would test the even the most experience riders for their ability to make split section decisions while negotiating the extremely technical and rugged terrain that waited ahead.

A crowd of people gathered around the perimeter of the fenced in field to catch a glimpse of their favorite riders heading into the 1st turn before disappearing off into the woods to return 30 minutes later after completing one lap on the newly designed 11 mile course.

Brandon Ballance and Bryan Baker weren't alone as Rhett Butler and Chad Duvall get hooked up together and bringing Andy Lagzdins and Kim Kuhnle to a halt right behind them at the back of the pack.

With the battle for the lead amongst the Pro Class well underway, it would be only one minute before the Pro Am Class would be set loose into the woods for their own battle for the class win and possible overall.

If any Pro Am rider was destined for the podium from the 2nd row, the first one to come to my mind, would have been none other than Adam(Kurt) McGill with his impressive track record of finishes this season. Adam has finished every race this season 15th Overall of better with two 7th Overall finishes and has won four Pro Am Class races along the way, and has already developed a 63 Points lead over 2nd Place Pro Am Rider Scott Fleischhauer.

05-05-2005, 07:45 PM
Another top contender in the Pro Am Class, Duane Johson, has really picked up his game the past two races finishing behind McGill in 2nd Place and also has three top 20 Overall finishes this season and currently sits 4th in points behind another fast rider Scott Barron.

Admin
05-05-2005, 07:47 PM
#29 Joshua Ribley has picked up where he left off last season finishing consistently himself in the top 20 overall which has him sitting comfortably in 5th place in points

EX Pro Rider, Bryan Hulsey has made a fairly smooth transition off the vForce back onto a sports quad for the first time in two years, and he is currently in 7th place in the Pro Am class behind James Wahl.

After one minute of time elapsed after the Pro Class was released, Ricky Towery, waved the green flag and the Pro Am Class was off and running with Adam McGill immediately getting out front from the start in hopes of winning his 4th race in a row with Joshua Ribley, Timothy Gale, Jeffrey Pickens, and Scott Barron right behind him looking to earn their first win the season.

Many riders headed into the pits after the 1st lap to get some clean goggles and/or gloves before heading back out for another lap, so the race was on in the pits.

William Yokley maintained his lead heading into the 2nd lap with Matt Smiley jumping up to 2nd Place after skipping the pits.

Johnny Gallagher also picked up several spots and moved into the top three overall with #8 Jeremy Rice running in 4th right behind him.

Bill Ballance dropped back to 5th place after stopping for some fresh goggles.

Admin
05-05-2005, 08:48 PM
Greg Trew also stopped for Goggles and wrapped some shop towels around his hand grips to try to help with keeping his hands grips clean as he came through in 6th place.

#4 Chad Duvall’s bad luck would continue as he found himself caught up with Rhett Butler at the beginning of the race only to have his chain derail on him during the 2nd lap and wrap up around his front sprocket and bring his race to an end after early once again :(

Chad Duvall wasn't alone with Thomas Barrett bad luck continued on from Big Buck with his Honda breaking down before the end of the 1st lap along with Kim Kuhnle's Polaris Predator. Also, #16 Santo Derisi was sidetracked while working on his rear shock and forgot to put on the nut which allowed the bolt to fall out and leave him sitting as well :(

In hot pursuit behind the Pro riders, were Pro Am riders, Scott Barron running in 8th Overall by time and leading the Pro Am Class with Joshua Ribley running in 10th Overall and 2nd place before his race ended in the second lap, which allowed Adam McGill to move back up into 2nd place.

Admin
05-05-2005, 09:07 PM
Derek Litterini was also having a stellar race early running in top 15 Overall and 4th place in the Pro Am Class before his day was also ended before the end of the second lap :( , which allowed Timothy Gale to move up into 4th before his race ended after only two laps as the brutle conditions quickly began claiming riders left and right.

05-05-2005, 09:16 PM
By the beginning of the 3rd lap and the Pro Riders were due in any second, everyone was on the edge with anticipation of who would emerge through the scoring tent with the lead heading into the last lap of the race.

05-05-2005, 09:19 PM
In true fashion, #1 Bill Ballance had worked his way back up from 5th place to take over the lead before the end of the lap, and he headed into the pits for some goggles and his crew quickly whipped down his grips before he headed out of the pits.

Admin
05-05-2005, 09:20 PM
Next into the pits for some goggles was William Yokley, but he didn't waste much time as Chris Borich whipped into his pits right behind Yokley.

Admin
05-05-2005, 09:22 PM
With determination in his eyes, Chris Borich roost out of his pits looking to close the gap on Yokley and Ballance before the end of the race.

Admin
05-05-2005, 09:25 PM
Just over 20 seconds later, Jeremy Rice pulls into the pits to get some fresh goggles from his father before heading out for the last lap in season best 4th place.

Admin
05-05-2005, 09:27 PM
Moving up from 9th place to 5th place was Todd Knippenberg as he too stopped for goggles, but his best race of the season would end in the 2nd lap when his chain would derail after his rear sprocket became bent from rubbing into his rear skid plate.

Admin
05-05-2005, 09:31 PM
Andy Lagzdins made his way past Rhett Butler once again and moved his way up to 11th place without goggles, and he decided that he wasn't going to waste anytime stopping for goggles either for the 3rd lap as he blasted his way quickly into the top 10 overall at the beginning of the 3rd lap by not stopping, but would his strategy pay off with 30 minutes of racing without goggles ahead of him?

Admin
05-05-2005, 09:33 PM
Amazingly, Scott Barron had charged his way into the top 5 Overall heading into the 3rd lap and continued to lead the Pro Am Class and also wasn't stopping for any goggles to slow him down.

Admin
05-05-2005, 09:38 PM
#66 Adam McGill was wasting anytime either as he put in the fastest Pro Am 2nd lap time of 31:08 and moved to within 13 seconds of Scott Barron as he charged in 7th Overall behind #18 Johnny Gallagher.

Admin
05-05-2005, 09:40 PM
Just over a minute behind Adam in 3rd was #28 Chris Bithell, but his hard charge would come to a stop when he would get hung up on the last lap and lose several minutes and drop back to 11th place.

One of the first riders to be claimed was Bill Ballance as he attempted to get around a lapper he found himself hung-up on a log, which required him to get off his Yamaha to free himself, which was enough time to allow William Yokley to move in and take back over the lead.

Bill quickly tracked down William again and passed him only to find himself stuck in a bottleneck, which William Yokley once again took advantage off and found a line around Bill and the rest of the bottlenecked riders, which put William back into the lead.

With less than a mile to go, Bill reeled back in William in hopes up making the pass before the checkered flag on one of the multiple line hill climbs near the finish.

Admin
05-06-2005, 06:44 AM
Bill’s opportunity arose when William took a line up the hill that appeared smooth, but it became extremely rough at the top, so Bill picked the line beside of it in hopes of passing William at the top of the hill, and everything was going as planned until Bill encountered a log across the climb, which caught his front tire as he went over it and sent him into a tree bordering the track, which brought him to a stop.

To make things worse, Bill’s battery was dead, so he had to quickly spin his Yamaha around and drift down the hill to pop start it. In the process of pop starting his machine, Jeremy Rice came up the hill and made the pass on Bill to take over 2nd place.

There was an incredible battle going on out front, but where was Chris Borich was the question? Unfortunately for him, he also found himself stuck in the last lap after trying to make a pass on a lapped rider which dropped him back several positions

Once he was going again, he knew that if he wanted a change at the podium and retain his points lead he better put the hammer down, and Borich was up to the task as he moved his Alba Action machine within sight of Jeremy Rice running in 3rd Overall when disaster struck.

The front wheel of Borich’s machine hit one of the holes that formed in the track bringing his momentum to a stop and sending him over the handlebars with his leg catching on the bars as he went over the front superman style with his Honda now in hot pursuit of him to the ground. His Honda flipped and landed on top of Borich pinning him underneath. Banged up and bruised, Borich crawled out front under his Honda as Jenks went past him, and he remounted his machine once again in an attempt to salvage as many points as possible.

Borich ditched his smeared goggles and took off after Jenks with only a few miles left in the race. With a little over a mile to go, Borich caught up to Jenks and began eating a spray of roost coming off of Jenk’s tires as he tried to keep his Four Stroke Tech Machine in front of Borich

To my amazement, the next rider to come flying past me on the track was Pro Am Rider, Scott Barron running on a few seconds behind the battling Jenks and Borich after starting over a minute behind the Pros, which put Scott on the edge of the top three overall with less than one mile to go to the checkered flag

Admin
05-06-2005, 07:12 AM
The next rider to emerge from the trees was none other than Johnny Gallagher putting together his best race since 2003 and was set to finish 6th in the Pro Class if he could hang on for one more mile.

Admin

Andy Lagzdins strategy paid off as he rode goggle less on the last lap which allowed him to work his way up to 8th place behind the struggling Matt Smiley with only a mile to go in the race. Matt wasn’t struggling because of the rough conditions because he is a very experienced mud racer, but instead, his Polaris wasn’t dealing well with the wet conditions and was experiencing some electrical issues, which was keeping it from running properly.

Andy Lagzdins was able to capitalize on Matt’s electrical issues when his Polaris shut off with less than a mile to go, which allowed Andy to make the easy pass and move into 7th place. Matt luckily was able to get his Polaris fired up again and takes off after Andy in hopes of catching him before the finish line.

#2 William Yokley was able to hold onto the lead and win his 1st race of the season. When Yokley crossed the finish line with the win the tossed his hands in the air right before the dropoff into a mud puddle, which sent William flying off his machine and into the mud, but he didn't care with the fans cheering as he got up and danced around in the mud celebrating his hard fault win.

The only problem was that coming right behind him was Jeremy Rice, and he headed to the scoring tent to get scanned, but they couldn’t scan him until the scanned Yokley, but Yokley was no where near the scanning tent as he celebrated with the fans.

Meanwhile, Bill Ballance crosses the finish line followed by Chris Borich, and Chris Jenks which created even more confusion as the scorer left the scoring tent to scan Yokley, so the other riders could be scanned.

Admin
05-06-2005, 07:33 AM
With William Yokley, finished celebrating, he remounted his Suzuki to head to the Podium and things seemed to return to normal as Scott Barron crossed the finish line and road over to the scoring tent and was scored immediately, which showed he had just taken over 3rd Overall by finishing the race less than a minute behind Bill Ballance.

Admin
05-06-2005, 07:35 AM
Bill Ballance and Jimmy couldn’t believe what just happened and they were explaining that Bill wasn't scanned as soon as he crossed the finish line, and his finish time wasn't an accurate reflection of his true race time.

With all the controversy surrounding the top 4 finishers, Chris Borich was able to make the last minute pass on Chris Jenks to move into 5th Overall and 4th in the Pro Class, and he was glad that the race was finally over as you could tell that he was in some serious pain from his earlier dismount.

Chris Jenk’s string of top 7 Overall finishes was kept alive as he finished his 6th race of the year between 3rd and 7th Overall and moved into 5th Place in Points.

Congratulations Chris Jenks on yet another great Race :macho

Finishing behind Chris Jenks were Johnny Gallagher (6th) and Andy Lagzdins (7th) after both of them over came the elements to put in an incredible race, but to top the pair for the overall was Pro Am Rider, Adam McGill.

Adam McGill winning streak ended, but his four race string of 7th and 8th overall finishes continued after once again working his way through the Pro Class riders to finish in the top ten overall.

A disappointed Matt Smiley finished in 8th and explained to his team manager Jay Goebel what was going on with his machine during the race, so they can have the problem solved before the next mud event.

A large crowd formed around the Podium across the road from the finish line, and everyone was wondering who would be awarded the final podium spot.

Admin
05-06-2005, 11:18 AM
Bill Ballance initially took to the podium for his 3rd overall performance, and he explained to the crowd what happened during the race, but before he could be awarded his 3rd overall trophy, the results were updated and Scott Barron was now scored in 3rd Overall, so Bill was asked to remove his machine from the podium to make room for Pro Am Rider Scott Barron.

Bill Ballance requested to view the video tape himself with the racer productions crew for them to clarify the change in the results, so John Ayers and Bill Ballance went to review the different video tapes.

Amazingly, Dustin Walker was able to come from almost dead last off the start and work his way up to 11th by the end of the first lap, but he remained two minutes behind the leader Kyle Martin, so he put his head down and charged through the pack putting in the fast class lap time of 33:29, which was over a minute faster than anyone else and moved him up into 2nd place by the beginning of the third lap, and Dustin Walker and Brian Shaw would go on to both pass Kyle Martin on the last lap with Dustin Walker pulling out the win and 25th Overall:macho

#77 Marc Marshall is currently 8th in points and was looking to improve upon his best finish of the season at Steele Creek where he finished 5th, but it wouldn't happen this weekend as he would go on to finish in 9th ahead of Justin Trevis.

Florida Resident, Taylor Kiser grabbed the Holeshot aboard his YFZ, but would end up dropping back to third by the end of the 1st lap behind Josh Allen and the points leader Todd Rothermel.

By the 2nd lap, both Allen and Rothermel would drop out of the lead with Thomas Brown taking over the lead with Taylor Kiser only 3 seconds back, but on the last lap, Taylor Kiser would pass Brown and pull over a minute lead on the way to his 4th Win of the season.

The narrow gate opening heading across the road presented a problem to many riders as they were pushed out into the fence with Greg Foggin becoming the victim this time, which sent him to the back, but he managed to work his way up to 14th by the end of the race.

Marc Marshall also was jammed up at the start and would come from 20th at the end of lap one up to 9th to finish the race.

Greg Lott started his season at the Orange Crush with a 2nd Place finish and 38th Overall, but he has yet to finish in the top 10 since until this weekend at Loretta's when he finally was able to get things together and finished in 4th place and is currently 12th in points.

ATVriders.com GNCC Morning Journalist, Fred Mudd, heads into Loretta's coming off his worst race of the season after starting dead last and only finishing one lap at Big Buck.

At Loretta's he got off to a good start and settle into 9th place for two laps, but he would never finish the last lap, which sent him back to 17th.

Fred won't be at the next two rounds, so if anyone would feels they have what it takes to take photos and write a race report, please send me an email webmaster@atvriders.com because I could use the help especially at Ohio with Youth ATVs back in action.

Michael Heaster started his racing season at Steele Creek, but never finished one lap, but he earned himself an 11th place finish at Big Buck with hopes on improving upon it this weekend, but it wasn't meant to be as he only finished one lap, so hopefully things will come together for him at the Penton.

#70 Pete Stadtmueller got off to his best start of the season with the Holeshot, but when the day was over, he ended up having his worst finish of the season in 10th place, and he is currently 5th in points.

Shane Hughes would go on to win after tracking down and passing Jeffrey Vensel on the last lap. Rob Zimmerman was leading, but never finished the third lap after developing a three minute lead :(

Vet Class

Jeff Brest was up to 2nd in points behind Steve Zapfe, but after wrecking hard at Big Buck, he still wasn't 100% heading to Loretta's with badly bruised hip, but he gave it his best shot to try to salvage some points, but unfortunately, he would have been better off to watch because he ended up getting a sharp pain which caused him to wreck again, and he ended up finishing only two laps.

Jeff dropped back to 4th in the standings, but with throw aways, he still could climb his way back up to the top before season end.

Scott Smalley had his 2nd best race of the season finishing in 6th place and moves up in points to 5th behind Jeff brest.

Loretta's was only the third race of the season for Cale Clarkson, but he is making his presence known with two six place finishes at the previous two rounds.

Cale would go on to finish 7th at Loretta's after dropping back to 15th after the 2nd lap.

Carl Bauer made his first GNCC race this season, and he was obviously happy to be on the line regardless of the conditions, and he would work his way up to 6th place by the end of lap two, but as many other riders, he nevered finished the last lap of the race.

With the Start of the Vet Race underway, This 450R rider grabbed a little more traction than he expected heading across the paved road and it almost sent him over, but he managed to pull it out and hang onto the lead with Jeff Brest right behind him.

Friends, John Cunningham and John Kenney are currenty 2nd and 3rd in points behind the undefeated Dave Simmons, and they hope the muddy conditions at Loretta's will give them the chance to get a win this weekend.

2 Stroke racer, Joey Marqueria, currently sits in 3rd place in points behind Brian Edwards and Wes Stone after moving past Nathan Gogno.

The past three races Joey's finishes have improved each race with a 4th, 3rd, and 2nd place finish, so if the trend was going to continue he would have needed his 1st win of the season.

Joey didn't win the race, but he did finish in 3rd place for yet another impressive finish.

Luke DeCesare grabbed the Holeshot and the lead in the 2 Stroke Class, but would ended up finishing in 10th place.

Dave Simmons was right behind Luke and was out front in the Senior class, but would end up getting passed by Terry Brooks on his Banshee before heading into the woods, but he would pass Terry before the end of the lap and take back over the lead where he would stay the rest of the race as he won his 6th race of the season by over 12 minutes:eek:

Hey Dave, you are just too fast for your age, so I want to see you Birth Certificate at the next race because I am starting to wonder is you are even out of High School yet with your speed:D

Admin

Terry Brooks is one of the few riders that remains on the Banshee for racing anything other than Drags, but he showed that he knew how to handle the Banshee through the trees as he held onto 3rd after two laps behind John Kenney, but would run into problems on the last lap and drop back to 7th.

Brandon Sommers has quickly made a name for himself after winning the first 5 races of the season.

Michael Novak and Josh Kirkland have both missed a race, but are still in the running for finishing out the season in the top 10 in points.

Michael Novak once again proved he knows how to get a Holeshot as he edged out Brandon for the honor heading into the woods.

Brandon Sommers would go to pass Novak before the end of the lap with Michael Novak holding tight in 2nd place heading into the second lap, but he would drop back to 9th by the end of the lap and finish the race in 7th place to tie a season best.

Tyler Lenig once again started near the back of the pack and was caught up in the chaos of over 40 riders trying to fit into a single line path.

Tyler in usual form didn't let it slow him down as he made quick work of moving through the class and up to 3rd by the end of the 1st lap, but was over a minute behind Brandon Sommers.

By the end of the 2nd lap, Tyler passed Brandon and took over the lead with Brandon only a few seconds behind him heading into the final lap.

Tyler Lenig never looked back and went on to win his 1st race of the season and end Brandon's winning streak at five races.

Congratulations, Tyler on an incredible come from behind victory:macho

The Alabama Resident, Steven Mitchell would go on to pass Jacob and take over the lead and win his second race of the season and it currently leading the class in points after not finishing a race below 2nd place.

Benji Edwards would finish 3 minutes behind Steven in 2nd Place with Tom Bobrowicz right behind him in 3rd place.
