hello , i have a 2005 400ex with the mods listed below , i keep on buying parts to try and make it faster and better brakes and supsension and etc. , I am thinking of going to get a 450r and trade my 400 in since it comes with everything i want already , my only questions about the 450r is ... , is it easy to start with the kick start and i have heard that the 1st gear isnt very good for trails , when i get the quad im getting a hmf ballance slip on or a yoshimura trs tri oval slip on , would this help out with the bottom end , and i dont want to put a new 13t sprocket on either , please give me your honest opinion about the 450 , i do mostly trail riding but the trails are fast , i usaully stay in high 2nd or 3rd on my 400 , but there are alot of straights were we open them up , so i dont wanna lose any top end with the 13t sprocket , please help.

Very easy to start

1st gear is kinda high, but once ya add a pipe, jet and filter its not to bad it pulls much better then.

I would not hesitate a second to buy the 450r its perfect for what you want it to do!!

Love mine and 13t front doesnt hurt top that bad especinally after you pipe and jet it.. the 13t does make it easier in the woods and on tight trails imo...:)

I ride only trails with mine. I wasnt originally in the market for the 450, and actually was on my way to buy a used 04 400 for 3500. But, as fate would have it, I saw my 04 450 for 4000g. The damn thing had hardly been riden, and looked like it had rolled right off the showroom floor. I bought it with the thought of selling it for 5000g, then buying a 05 400. After riding the 450, I just couldnt make myself sell it. I recently ordered the 13 tooth sprocket in hopes to correct the tall first gear. If you're riding fast trails......ie keeping your 400 in second and third, then you probably wont have to worry about the first gear. You really have to be going slow, lugging it very low in the rpm's for it to struggle. Even then, mine eventually will pull itself right up. I have only the HRC kit done as far as mods. I absolutely love my 450!! Im sure you'll be happy with it too.

thanks for the info guys , my only other question is how much of a difference is the 400 vs 450 doing wheelies , ive heard the 450 rares up to easy , my 400 would barely come up , unless you tried to.

the 450 is really easy to wheelie but its not nearly as bad as everyone said. i was worried about getting one because i had heard it jumps wierd and wheelies too easily but since i got it i havent had a problem wheeling or jumping wierd at all. i love it.

ok , but im not a racer or anything , i just like trail riding and there are some steep hills and rocks etc. , we usually just goof off with wheelies and small jumps and race when we get a straight , will the 450r be ok for this kinda stuff? I love my 400 but i want more power , better suspension , brakes , etc , I will also be getting a 13t sprocket to help out with the tall gears.

yea a 450 would be grea for that and you would love it. and if you have the money i say buy the 450r but if not you can always have a lot of fun on a modded 400
